We were raised very strict. My dad was a Pentecostal preacher. Both he and my mom have died. This is the 1st year of not having one of my parents at the family gathering. I want to have a cooler full of pepsi, water, wine coolers and beer. I feel tremendous guilt for serving liquor at the get together. I never did it before out of respect for my parents. It was a religious belief not to drink. Why am I feeling guilty at 41 years old for having alcohol at my 4th of July party. Can someone tell me it is ok to drink now. I am an adult. I also plan to have fireworks

In order to understand this, you have to understand the religious faith I was raised in. If you have never known anyone in the Pentecostal faith, you cannot possibly understand where I am coming from . It is much to deep for you to understand.

Also, Oral Roberts is not even close to Pentecostal. He would be doing good to be a Baptist.

You've gotten some great advice on the Pentecostal/drinking issue, so I will leave that alone, however, your original comment was that you wanted something good to cook on the grill - Cook your burgers, ribs, etc., but for a fun, different side dish, cut acorn squash in 1/2 inch slices (they will be circular with a hole inside like a doughnut), brush with olive oil and salt and pepper, or go sweet with canola oil and cinnamon sugar, grill until tender. I hope you enjoy your day with your siblings, and I hope you enjoy your life!

Look, even JESUS turned water into wine! So relax already. The main thing is not to offend anyone. I'd keep the cooler with the alchohol separate from the sodas and water. Casually mention to your guests as they arrive, that the stronger stuff is in that cooler over there------>. It is OKAY to drink. It is not okay to be a drunk. There's a difference. I think you need to have a little talk with Mom and Dad and tell them that although you did not drink at these parties while they were alive out of respect for them, YOU are giving the party this year and WILL be having beer and wine as you do not share the same religious approach to drinking alcohol that they did. And if anyone gives you any grief, you tell them that you are sorry that you have offended them but that this is your party and when they have a party they can serve or not serve whatever THEY want.

You are 41 years old. You can do what you want to do . If your being responsible with the alcohol, which I'm sure you know the rules, no drinking and driving, etc. I don't see anything wrong with it. The rules you were raised with were your parents rules, you are the adult now and maybe a parent, its time for you to make your own rules, and stop letting them guilt you. Life is so short, relax and enjoy yourself. Happy 4th!!

My father is a retired pentecostal minister, and I am a member of a pentecostal church. There's nothing wrong with the consumption of alcohol. It is a sin to be drunk; gluttony,in any thing,is a sin. Unfortunatly, many older pentecostals were all about condemnation-what you could and couldn't do. It's not their fault, that's how they were taught. We now know that your christian walk with Christ is not determined by what you eat or drink, but is determined by the condition of your heart. If you do not feel that having a few alcoholic beverages at your gathering is bad, then don't feel guilty. Do not confuse bad doctrine with God.

p.s. it may not hurt to pray about it. Prayer never hurt anybody. God still listens to us even when we haven't talked to Him in a while!

Cook up some burgers, bratwurst, and hot dogs on the grill and serve up the liquor. Don't feel guilty, it's the 4th of July and it's time to Celebrate your Independence! Liquor is only a sin if over-indulgence is involved, but that's with anything basically!

We are raised with our parents beliefs, and to an extent carry them through our lives. It's O.K. to branch out from them. You are your own person. I'm sorry for your loss, but it really is fine to serve alcohol to others, and even partake yourself, just use moderation, and don't allow anyone to leave after drinking too much. You're feeling guilty because your parents might not have approved, but you can't go on living like they are still here honey, they aren't... have your party, ENJOY yourself.

First off, sorry about your parents. But, this is fine. There is nothing wrong with this. Jesus and His apostles drank. Also on July 4th beer and fireworks is basically the most American thing to do.

You didn't serve it out of respect for your parents but they wont be there to show disrespect to. Go ahead and have fun! Add some new traditions to the old ones.
