Do you think a universal organ donor tattoo is a good idea? If yes, what symbol do you think would most obviously signify you were an organ donor?

Before I posted, this was my thought. I would like a universal tatoo. I can't imagine changing my mind but if I did, I'd have it tattood over. It doesn't matter if I get some disease, just having a signed card/tattoo is not a guarantee of disease free organs. If I get hit by a bus and don't have my driver's license with me, I can still donate my organs that will all be checked for disease before the surgery anyway. I'm going to research this further - thanks everyone!

One that might actually look good.....I'd say a picture of a pair of hands hold out a heart as if giving it to someone....You'd probably have to tell someone what it stands for before they figure it out, but yeah.

Tom says- "Or a lunchbox with a heart on it...."

Organ Donor Symbol

I seriously want this to be a thing, it would have to be registered obviously but I think having a donor number, and tattooing that onto yourself would be the most efficient way so it could be quickly verified if say someone needed your organs asap and you could always take yourself off said donor list in which case your number would no longer be valid under your name and you wouldn t be "recycled" ;) I have always wondered this too as I never carry my ID with me since I rarely if ever buy anything I need it for and don t drive.

This will not work. What if the "tattoo donor" becomes tainted in someway during their life? There are thousands in the US infected with Hep C and do not even know it yet because the disease is slow moving and symptoms take many years to appear. The "tattoo donor" could be clean at the time of the tat but what about staying that way? Wheres the guarantee?

It sounds like an excellent idea. I think an appropiate tatoo would be the donor registration I.D. Donors have to sign a donor application, a copy of which would be taken to a tatoo studio . The copy would show the exact placement of the tatoo and the registration I.D. so that all the tatoos would all be consistent wherever they were done. Another helpful thing would be to include the person's blood type, in case they should need emergency blood transfusion.

I don't think that many of us oldsters would go for body art. As some of my organs are man-made, I am a card carrying member or the organ donor club. They will have a fun time harvesting me. I might suggest something like dog tags to wear either as a bracelet, or around the neck.

no i dont . i like tatoos , i have 7 , and i am an organ donor , but i dont want anyone making me get a particular tatoo. besides , it says on my licence i am an organ donor. also some people are so against tatoos that i dont see how anyone would ever get the public agree to that.

That's actually a really good idea. It might not be for everyone, but compared to some of the stupid crap I've seen tattooed on people's bodies... I like it.

I don't know about a tattoo, I don't like needles that well. Maybe a computer chip like they put on your pets would be better for me.
