These are farm type people so it can't be anything too fussy, but at the same time, I want them to be impressed with my cooking skills. They haven't specified anything I should bring, so I am open to anything, but am leaning toward dessert.

your favorite cookies. they are great for picnics and not too showy or anything, but people still really love a great cookie. and it is something everybody knows what it is. a new type of dessert might put some people off. pies and cakes are usually made by the family specialist in that area, so you might have some competition. but also be sure to ask your b/f. you wouldn't want to make something with peanuts and have someone in his family be allergic.

Wow . . . what a question! Do you know what they are serving during the function? I liked the guy's answer w/ cookies as a suggestion and his comment regarding peanuts! That was really well thought out! Impressive!

I know I have NEVER had a complaint when I made Mississippi Mud Cake though! And if I can make it . . .anyone can! If you want the recipe . . . send me a message! It's chocolatey and gooey! I can't think of a single person who's tried it that doesn't love it!

Oh another popular item to bring is spinach dip! The recipe is found on the Knorr Vegetable Soup box . . .be sure if u make it to serve it in the hollowed out Hawaiian bread too! I like to decorate around the bread for whatever holiday is happening! We reserve the bread we removed to serve with the dip as well as using a couple different types of crackers!

We live in Texas and are "farm" kind of people! We BBQ alot so . . .I know either of these dishes are liked by our friends and family!

Do you have a specialty? If so, don't worry about if they are farm people . . . make something you like and introduce it to them! I'm sure whatever you bring will be welcomed! I hope you have a great time!

Southern people willl have 40 pies!!! But it is a good idea....I am not a fan of telling people to go to websites, because I would rather share with you a recipe but I think if your at all nervous, make it cool and simple and impressive and FUNNY....so go to the Little Debbie website and check out some of her fun and funky ideas. They do have some stuff that looks good. Plus I don't make desserts so I got nuthing for ya!

If you would like to take a dish that is sure to please southern folks, do this:

1 2 pound bag Ore Ida diced potatos
1 16 ounce sour cream
1 can cream of chicken
1 8 ounce bag of shredded cheddar
salt and pepper
1 stick of melted butter
one small onion, diced

Mix all in a 9 X 13 and bake for 60 to 80 minutes. Cover tight with foil and a lid to transport and keep warm.

Good luck and have fun!!!

Well, its not a dessert, but it has always been a hit for me.
Spinach Dip. Get a box of Knoors Vegetable Soup Mix. Directions are on the box. Get a loaf of unsliced bread. (mountain bread etc.) cut a circle out on top and hollow it out like a bowl. Put the dip in the bread. Decorate around bread with crackers or pumpernickel slices or chips. Your preference. It's really good. Everyone will want the recipe. You'll be a hit!

If that doesn't do it for you. Try deviled eggs. They always go over good too.

JELLO DESSERT
1 pkg large jello, any flavor
coolwhip
fresh fruit

Make the jello as on the package but use 1/2 cup less water.
Add fresh fruit like fresh strawberries, grapes, chopped apples. Let it gel for 4-6 hours. Mix up the jello and add 1/4 tub of cool whip. Add more if desired. Mix well, and its like an ambrosia.

Put the mix in a glass, and top with more fresh fruit or coolwhip.
Serves 4

Bring YOUR favorite dessert! That way you won't have to worry about worrying whether or not a new recipe is going to turn out OK. You know how to make it, and you know it's good! And if your favorite dessert happens to come from the bakery in the grocery store, just remember... if you put it on a plate and cover it with foil... no one will be the wiser!

Mashed potatoes!

They are always a hit and will get finished, leaving a good impression on the possible in-laws. Boil them (use the red ones and leave the skins on), then mash them up with some milk, butter, some garlic, some Parmesan cheese, a little salt, and a little handful of chopped green onion. SO GOOD!

Make a really yummy fruit salad.

Open a few cans of your favorite fruits, like peaches, fruit cocktail, pears, pineapple, and mandarine oranges. The add some fresh fruits like bananas and maybe some tart apples to offset the sweetness thereby making it more refreshing. Add some Cool Whip non-dairy topping (incase anybody is lactose intolerant) and some of those miniature colored marshmallows.

It is healthy, refreshing, and yummy (sometimes my kids prefer this fruit salad over dessert).
