Ok, so, any time someone has had a cold sore (at any point in their life), it can be spread through kissing. An open sore does not need to be present. Herpes is a virus that lives in the skin and causes sores over and over again in the person throughout his or her life (usually in response to stress).

The ONLY symptom that oral herpes can give a person is a cold sore on the lips. The fact that your son has developed a cough is unrelated to the herpes. There is a change that he has been given the oral herpes virus and will develop cold sores in the future.

Good luck!

The type of herpes that occurs on the mouth is Herpes Symplex I and the one that you get on your genitals is Symplex II. They essentially are the same virus but the sores (also known as fever blisters) on the mouth are not considered an STD. Mouth herpes can be transmitted to the genitals when oral sex is given by someone with a sore on their mouth. Unless your son received oral sex from this girl, then I wouldn't worry about the STD. The cough is probably just that, a cough and is most likely unrelated. Millions of people have the Symplex I and will get fever blisters on occasion but most never really get anything more. Ask you doctor if you still feel unsure about the matter.

Herpes is highly contagious and just about everyone gets herpies smplex #1. If you can go your entire life without getting oral herpies you are one of the few. Get him to a doctor emediately to prevent outbreaks in other areas or it can spread all over his face over time. In the mouth, around the mouth on navel, on chin even on his nose and it will reacure every 3-6 months. to much sunlight helps the virus breed and likens the attacks. A diet rich in vitamen C will lessen the attacks.
The cough could be just a cold or may be something contagious and more serious like Mono. Take him to a doctor soon as a precaution.

well, I think it's definitely possible. The cough wouldn't be a sign. It all depends on how his body responds. There may be no problem or it may take 6 months to find out. That's the thing with herpes is the breakout. If you don't get a breakout, you don't even know that you have it. At least that's what I've read in my doc's office.

WOW, this is incredible. Relax...Guess what, 80-90% of the ignorant people telling you to take your son to the doctor have also been exposed to HSV 1.It is extremely common. If he develops a cold sore, then a physician can recommend a cream to help alleviate the pain. symptoms get less severe over time. No need to freak out! Take Care!

if your son kissed someone with herpes, you need to get off of your computer and get that boy to the doctor...he will live with this for the rest of his life. Maybe he will be more careful next time.

Yeah, why don't you get your butt off the computer and take your son to the doctor?
