How about a poached pear served with sides of chocolate sauce and rasperry sauce, garnished with a sprig of fresh mint? Visually, it must be one of the most beautiful desserts ever created, and it is not difficult to make. It has the added advantage of holding up well when made in advance, without getting soggy or losing shape.

I made creme brulee for dessert on Father's Day. It was a total success. My husband said he had a "food orgasm" :). It is actually the recipe that we use for our catering business, but I strained it 3 times as opposed to 1. It made a world of difference! Here is the recipe:
Classic Crème Brûlée
8 egg yolks
â
cup granulated sugar
2 cups heavy cream
1 tsp. vanilla
¼ cup raw sugar (for caramelized tops)
Set the oven to 300°. In a large bowl, whisk together egg yolks and sugar until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is thick and pale yellow. Add cream and vanilla, and continue to whisk until well blended. Strain into a large bowl, skimming off any foam or bubbles.
Divide mixture among 6 custard cups or ramekins. Place in a water bath and bake until set around the edges, but still loose in the center, about 50 to 60 minutes. Remove from the oven and leave in the water bath until cooled. Remove cups from the water bath and chill for at least 2 hours, or even up to 2 days. When ready to serve, sprinkle about 2 teaspoon of sugar over each custard. Torch until brown and bubbly and serve!

It depends on what you were having for dinner.
Or, are you just making deserts and giving them away as little presents?
Shoofly pie, for example, would be great at a barbeque. After a light fish meal... i'm thinking creme brule.
So, not helping much-- but something else to frame the question.
I don't know how to make any of the following, but I love them:
1. Chocolate fondue with strawberries, angel cake cubes, etc
2. Pecan pie drizzled throughout with chocolate
Good luck!

i think the best impressive dessert is almost just too simple. Take some pastry cups and fill them with different cremes and fresh fruit fillings. They will be lite and dainty and pretty. Doesn't take too much time and no cooking involved. Also with adding different fruits or treats such as just chocolate or cream or both you will even satisfy picky eaters with the variety. Good luck with your guests.

It depends on how good you are at cooking. If you're really good at it, go for the creme brulee, but otherwise I'd stick with baklava or tiramisu.

Tiramisu all the way. It's delicious, not too hard to make, elegant, and did I mention delicious? I want some now.
Creme brule is good with me too.
