I was admitted to the hospital and had every test imaginable - even ruled out GERD,costochondritis and pericarditis. Sometimes the pain is sharp behind my breastbone. 5 weeks on two different nsaids made no difference. Beta Blockers made no difference. I do have mild mitral valve prolapse. It's been almost two months of pain. Any ideas?

Thanks.

I get the same feeling sometimes when I breathe. It hurts. The best thing to do, is just continue to go to your regular doctor and have him run any and every tests possible on you to ease your nerves. If you still feel uncomfortable, ask him to refer you to a cardiologists.

Tina mentioned a popped rib head, and since I had one popped back in by an orthopedic doctor I can vouch for the fact that they hurt like heck.

I am also on heart medication, and when this rib issue acts up it is scary because I'm never sure what it is.

One thing I can tell you (as told by a cardiologist) is that heart issues are usually not sharp momentary stabbing as you've described, but more of a constant intense pain.

Regardless, you can never be too sure or too safe, so you might want to think about seeing a cardiologist...good luck.

Sorry you do need to see a doctor I don't think you have heart problems but its possible if you recently had a cold it might be a left over from that. Also think about what you have been doing like heavy lifting or straining you muscles it might be that simple Still its best to be sure than sorry, never mess with any chest pain

Sounds like you might have a popped rib head, they can pop out in the front or back and hurt like **** when you breathe, move just right. The Nsaids won't help the rib, might help the muscles relax but the rib has to go back on it's own or by a chiro. I would get an evaluation by a chiro if it doesn't go back soon. I know those suckers hurt like you wouldn't believe. Try some moist heat on the breast bone, massage around the ribs, even mineral ice, then try exercise/motions designed to stretch the cage like putting your arms straight out like an airplanes wings, from that position arms straight out lean backwards a little and pull your arms back keeping them straight. Raise arms upwards above your head straight above your head, hands together in a praying position, lean backwards a little. While standing, hands on hips, lean backwards. Those will stretch the rib cage muscles and after the heat and mineral ice numbing might release the bad rib back into position. If not, see a chiro.

ANXIETY.

You need to take a brisk 20 minute walk EVERY day for the rest of your life, and you will find that your life is entirely changed.

If you can't walk 20 minutes, walk three today, four tomorrow, five the next day... and work up to 20 minutes.

IT WILL make your chest pains go away, and your entire life will change.

Whole lot cheaper than all that worthless medication.

So, it's either anxiety, or, if you happen to have a 3" metal pole lodged in your chest, that would do it too.

I don't know what tests have been run. But consider spinal disease that could be pinching a nerve in your upper back. Certain respiratory diseases can cause chest pain. Lung cancer (not trying to scare you). If you got a rash with the chest pain, could be shingles. Chest wall pain from over exercise. Even a broken rib. I don't know if you've been worked up for any of these, but I hope this helps.

Could be panic attacks. When I was having panic attacks a lot I often had very uncomfortable chest pains like you're describing. During the actual attacks I felt like I was in the middle of a heart attack - very scary.

I'm not a doctor, though, so this is in no way an educated answer - it's just an educated guess.

Are you taking any medications? Do the symptoms go away when you stop taking them? I had to stop taking a popular allergy medication, because I would wake up in the middle of the night with chest pains. It took a long time before I associated the two. I discussed the problem with my doc and am now taking another allergy medication with no problem.
