I am also a diabetic and losing weight. My favorite snacks are olives, pickles, boiled eggs, nuts, and edamame. Edamame is soy beans and really tasty. 1/2 c. has 10 grams of protein and 9 grams of carbs. You can eat them either steamed and right out of the shell or you can find them frozen in bags at your grocery store. They are great for snacks, in salads, soup, whatever. They really are tasty. So, for a snack, you could fill a bowl with cherry or grape tomatoes, edamame, and any other kind of fresh veggies you like. it not only makes a snack, but could make a healthy meal. Find a great vinaigrette dressing if you need something with flavor or one of my favorite things is Mrs. Dash Southwest chipotle seasoning for some zippiness. I hope this helps. PS-my brother likes sardines for a snack. We disagree as I think they are icky but you may like them. If you are using something with protein like edamame you could add some pretzels, too.

Look for the flavored wheat free and "gluten free" rice cakes found in whole foods, or other specialty stores. You can even purchase them lightly salted. Also, most drug stores sell diabetic candy. Check there also. Patti Labelle is a 61 year old diabetic and has a great diabetic cookbook that's been out for a few years, you can pick that up as well, and get some great meal and snack idea.

You're correct, pretzels and crackers are both carbs which break down to sugars...
My boss watches his sugars all the time. He eats a lot of nuts and popcorn, also celery, (carrots are loaded in sugar even though they have no calories, so stay away from them) bell peppers, lettuce, tomatoes..

Try having a veggie, such as, cucumbers, carrots, or a salad with low fat dressing. Most veggies are concidered as "free" food. Try checking your blood sugar before eating each one though to see if there is any effect. I have never noticed one personaly, but everyones bodies are different.
