Viruses are very hard to kill. Take HIV/AIDS for example.

At least herpes is not deadly, like AIDS is. I'm sure someday they will find a cure. It might be another 10 years or so, but I believe someday they will find a cure for it.

I think the real trick with all Herpes infections, from cold sores to chicken pox and "mono", is that the virus just hangs out. It will rest in your cells, waiting for something to trigger its growth. The trigger can be something like mental stress or illness. Then you have an outbreak until your immune system clears the virus away. But the immune system does not do so completely. Some virus will be left hiding in other cells waiting for their trigger to cause the next outbreakt. I think the best bet for treatment will be longterm therapy that keeps the outbreaks so small that each time your immune system cleans up an outbreak, fewer cells are hiding the virus than the last time. This type of treatment will probably be used when there are drugs that are known to be safe to use for a long time and when they are stronger at stopping the virus from growing.

So, there will be a cure for Herpes, but not very soon.

There may some day be real cures for some viral diseases, but right now there is no near term light at the end of the tunnel for any of them. The best that we can do is to provide vaccines for some viral diseases, and anti-virals of various kinds to slow them down and reduce their population once you get infected. We haven't even got a cure for the common cold viruses, and think of how huge the finincial incentive is to drug companys for coming up with a treatment for that would be!
