Some people change because they feel it is wrong to kill animals for food. Others become vegetarian for health reasons.

Because they may think it's wrong to kill an animal or have seen an animal being killed for food so it has put them off.

Alot of people also loose weight becoming a vegetarian which is good if you want to loose the weight but then you don't get the protein which you need for a balanced diet. (There are other ways of getting your protein though).

Alot of people say their vegetarians but then you see them eating meat! I'm not a vegetarian but i'm quite fussy and am probably more put off by meat than an actual vegetarian.

If i'm in a supermarket i hate walking down the meat ile it makes me feel sick, but i don't think it would bother some vegetarians...it's weird.

PS: Everyone eat chicken it's lovely, your mad if you don't eat it, my mouths watering just the thought of it! ;-)

People become vegetarians because it's more healthier, and vegetarians think that killing animals is wrong and cruel because of the abuse, slaughter, blood, and when people mutilate pork by mutilating their ears and cutting off their tails so they want to save the animals. Some people go beyond and become vegans, and they think that products that come from animals are wrong to use so they are against eating and using animal-by products. It's their choice not ours.

vegetarianism for me is about a number of things, the karmic (karma) arguement for me is a strong one and can illustrated simply by visiting a battery hen farm, you really can't believe how bad those places are unless you get there yourself and see it!
Secondly while the vast majority of the world don't have the choice, us living in the priveliged west really can decide very specifically what we do and don't eat, given this choice i'm not too keen on eating hormone riddled crap that has lived a cramped and sweaty existance, in fact this point also rubbishes anti vegetarians primary arguement that eating meat is natural, as i cannot think of anything more UN-natural than many of todays farming methods.

Hi, I gave up meat and fish 17 yrs ago, mainly for reason 5) in KRYS's answer.
It doesn't make any sense for poor nations to use what little arable land they have to grow foodstuffs for export to be eaten by European cattle. For me it makes far more sense for them to grow soya or anything else that their PEOPLE can eat themselves. So often it is economic pressure on these "3rd world" countries which makes them grow/sell cash crops to service a debt.
As well as that, the health side is an eye opener, I read a book called "the inside story of the meat industry" and that explained why bacon sizzles, shrinks and leaks white gunk when cooked, as well as what sausages are made of....makes the eyes water.

If it means that to make poverty history we have to eat less meat then I'm in. Not sure how the Americans would cope though.

Some are born not being able to digest certain meats. Some think it's cruelty. Some probably have developed an allergic reaction. Some because of different health reasons that require them to refrain from certain meats. And that's all I can think of. I personally stopped eating beef because i felt it was gonna make me fatter faster and I stopped eating pork because of a bet I made with an ex boy friend.

1-animals raised for meat are treated horribly and have miserable lives.

2-eating animals is not necessary, so it's selfish to kill them just because we can.

3-vegetarians are much healthier and live longer than meat eaters. the more meat you eat, the more unhealthy you are.

4-it takes 12 gallons of water to make a pound of wheat, and 2500 gallons of water to make a pound of beef. raising animals for food is a huge waste of resources and harms the environment.

5-in a world where many are starving, it makes no sense to feed so much edible grain to animals and get hardly any meat back in return. if we fed the grain straight to people instead, we could feed every person in the world.

here's more info. 101 reasons!

there are several reasons why people become vegetarians, for instance i chose to become a vegetarian cause i tough it by being one i could live a heathlier life. Som people also chose to become vegetariinas because of religion, health and concerns about the cruelty for animals.

religious, medical, and moral reasons. if you want to become a vegetarian, i suggest doing it gradually, like giving up red meat, then other meat, then poultry, etc. also, the factory farming in the us is getting out of control. the government subsidizes huge factory farms that take a whole bunch of animals and push them all together in tiny little cages, feed them antibiotics and fake hormones, and basically treat them badly. if you are going to eat meat, i suggest organic meat. you can get it at places like pcc, whole foods, and trader joe's.
also be aware of when labels say free range.
the usda standard for free range is the cage door has to be open for an hour every day, regardless of whether the chickens go out or not.

You have obviously had some really good answers to this question, and some particularly offensive answers. I just want the points. :-)

Oh, ok, people go vege for different reasons, sometimes for religious or ethical reasons, sometimes for their health, sometimes to be trendy (oooh, peer pressure) and sometimes just because they don't like meat. I've even know meat eaters to go vegetarian after seeing the process from livestock to butchers.

I love my meat and I think the human body needs meat to function properly.
