Jet Fighter Cake

Ingredients

CAKE:

1 (18.25-oz.) pkg. Pillsbury® Moist Supreme® Devil's Food Cake Mix

1 1/4 cups water

1/2 cup oil

3 eggs

FROSTING:

1 (16-oz.) can Pillsbury® Creamy Supreme® Vanilla Frosting

Black icing color (not liquid)

DECORATIONS:

1 graham cracker, cut diagonally in half

1 white coconut and marshmallow-covered chocolate cake ball with creamy filling

1 (3-inch) pretzel stick

2 blue chewy fruit snack rolls

1 red chewy fruit snack roll

2 large white gumdrops

2 large black gumdrops

2 large orange gumdrops

Directions

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour 13x9 inch cake pan. In large bowl, combine all cake ingredients; beat at low speed until moistened. Beat 2 minutes at medium speed. Pour batter into greased and floured pan.

Bake at 350°F for 30 to 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool cake for 15 minutes; use a thin knife to loosen cake from pan and remove. Move cake to wire rack to cool for approximately 30 more minutes.

Cut cake in half lengthwise, leaving one half whole for body of plane. With remaining half of cake, cut crosswise into 1/3 and 2/3 pieces. Cut 2/3 piece diagonally in half for large wings. Cut 1/3 piece into 3 triangles for nose and small wings. Place cake pieces on platter or foil-covered cardboard to form plane as shown in image above.

Add black icing color to frosting to make desired gray; blend well. With small amount of gray frosting, frost one side of graham cracker triangles for stand-up wings; set aside to dry. When dry, turn over and frost other side of cracker triangles. Meanwhile, frost cake with remaining frosting. Carefully place frosted graham crackers onto cake as shown in photograph, pressing down lightly to secure into place.

Place cake ball at front of plane for cockpit. Cut 1 blue fruit snack roll into window shape for cockpit window. Wrap remaining blue fruit snack roll around pretzel stick for needle of plane; insert wrapped pretzel into nose of plane.

Flatten 2 white gumdrops; place on each big wing. With remaining blue fruit snack roll and red fruit snack roll, cut out trim, stars and letters to decorate plane as shown in photograph. Place 2 large black gumdrops at end of plane for exhaust pipes. Cut 2 large orange gumdrops into pieces for flames; arrange behind exhaust pipes as shown in photograph.

1 cup Butter
32 Large Marshmallows
16 cups Popped popcorn

Put popcorn into large container. Pour marshmallow mixture over top. Stir to mix well.
Add remaining ingredients. Mix together. Pack into a greased 10 inch ange food tube pan or 12 cup bundt pan. Let set until cool. Turn out onto plate to serve. Cut into wedges for all different size kids.

Recipes are easy to come by, so I will give you an idea for a cake style:
Bake cake batter in 5 bread pans - one for each year old
Turn them upside down on a cardboard covered with plastic or aluminum foil
Frost and decorate like a choo choo train
using Oreos as train wheels; life savers, sticks of gum; licorice; gumdrops for other decorations
And then using gummy bears or animal crackers as passengers
HAVE FUN

Going to go in a different direction that a recipe. There's a company that makes cake pans in ALL different designs that are mostly for kids. Their favorite cartoon character, etc.

With kids, it's not the cake but the fun of it....
Of course you have to make the flavor cake they want--chocolate, white, etc. Their cake pans hold one boxed cake (a standard cake recipe.)

The first link is to the WILTON company so you can see what they sell, and the cool idea for cupcakes for the 4th of July.

The 2nd link is to their character pan site. Now if you can't find what he would like there, check on eBay--there's nearly 2500 Wilton cake pans selling at any given time.

Have fun!
PS I always liked sparkles in my cake...(ADULT SUPERVISION REQUIRED)

Use a box cake mix, then fill flat bottomed ice cream cones about 2/3 full. Set in cupcake tins to bake, going by the cup cake directions on the box. Ice w/ store bought icing, then decorate w/ anything! Think sprinkles, gummy candies, candy corn or any soft candy. They can be made to look like flower pots, too. For boys, ice w/ choc icing, sprinkle on choc cookie crumbs, then stick a couple of gummy worms and bugs on the top!

Look for a book that has many different things you can do with cake mixes. Does your son like super heroes or cars. Think of his interests when decorating. I used to make cakes with a road and houses and bridges and little cars. It was always a hit. Good luck and happy decorating.

My suggestion would be to buy a couple of boxes of "Jifffy" yellow cake mix. It only requires 1 or 2 eggs and a small amount of milk. You can also make a really easy frosting out of "powdered sugar" and milk. This will be a lot easier if he is going to help you. And if I may also add...make "cupcakes" instead of a sheet or layered cake, it's a lot more fun and imaginative!

How about a JUNK FOOD Cake? I made one for my son and his friends were ecstatic.

On a platter or cake serving plate (I used a pedestal cake stand), layer the following items:

powdered donuts (full size)
Ding Dongs
Twinkies
Moon Pies
powdered donuts (mini size)
Single cupcake with a candle in it.

Decorate with candies, such as M&M's, orange slices, licorice, etc.
