A TRUE vegetarian is someone who does not eat the flesh of animals. There are two purposes for this, with the main one being a desire to not kill animals for meat, and the secondary purpose being to have better health (one assumes that most animal-derived products are less-healthy in some measures than plant-derived foods).

This is why it drives me a bit batty when I hear someone call themselves a vegetarian with one breath and then say how they'll "sometimes" eat chicken or fish or shellfish once in a while...and I'm like, "DUH! If you're eating flesh, then you're not a vegetarian. You may have a vegetable-centered diet, but you are NOT a vegetarian!"

I once dated a fellow who was BASICALLY a vegetarian, but he ate shellfish. He figured that shellfish are OK, since they are invertebrates and don't have a central nervous systems like that of vertebrates. So by HIS definition, he was a vegetarian, but by my definition, he was not.

Note that you CAN eat "animal protein" and still be a vegetarian, as long as you don't eat animal FLESH. You can eat eggs and milk and still be a vegetarian. Some people who do this call themselves "Lacto-Ovo vegetarians." (Or you can decide to eat eggs with no milk, milk with no eggs, etc.--it's just a variation of the same theme.)

SOME people say that it's just plain wrong to use animals for anything, period, even if you're not killing them for their flesh. So those people don't eat eggs or drink milk or use milk products. Some of them don't even use honey, since bees are "exploited" by gathering their honey. People who use no animal protein whatsoever are called "Vegans."

Note that you can get Vitamin B-12 from dairy products and eggs. If you are a Vegan, then you're likely to run out of Vitamin B-12 after a few years, and then you can develop a medical condition called "pernicious anemia," which causes nerve damage. Some Vegans say that they can get B-12 from bacterial sources, so they don't need take supplements. I have no opinon on this one way or the other; however, I'd say that if you're a Vegan, then you should let your doctor know this and have him/her check you out, regularly, for signs of pernicious anemia. If you get a clean bill of health, then you know that you are either getting enough B-12 from your non-animal diet OR that you stil have some stores of that vitamin in your body.
