While it is still exceedingly difficult to be a Vegan, being a lacto-ovo vegetarian is getting easier.
Gelatin is largely produced from Agar-Agar, or seaweed carageenan. It is almost too expensive to render meat sources vs producing it from vegetable sources. Lard too, is mostly replaced with partially hydroginated vegetable oils. But these have trans fats, which are far worse for your body.
Rather than tell you what to avoid, I would urge you to go to a food co-op or natural foods store and inquire about veg-friendly foods they carry and classes that they offer. Learn to make your own cookies, cakes and treats (who knows! You might be good at it and make some money, too.).
Take Culinary courses to recognize good ingredients and learn great techniques. You can saute firm tofu and serve it with a great sauce just like a fancy piece of fish! Surprisingly tasty and satisfying for your meat eating friends!
The best thing to do is to be vigilant, read labels, ask questions and stay informed about current trends in food processing.
Every vegetarian has a story of being duped. Many gimmics are used to mask ingredients that have become unfashionable or politically incorrect. Remember McDonalds switching to 100% veg oil... yeah, right... they still treated their fries with beef extract, and WHOOPS... forgot to mention it! Many labels have done away with saying MSG, and now say "yeast extract," or "autolyzed vegetable flavoring" to describe it.

Watch out for bean-n-rice or flavored rice/pilaf mixes in the grocery store--they often have meat flavoring like meat fat or broth even though they don't mention it on the label. Vegetarian baked beans--ok. Any other baked beans--probably not, and watch out for some kinds of "plain" canned beans, too. I got some Great Northern beans and when I opened them, there was this gross pork fat lumpy stuff on top. Nasty. Fat-free whole or refried beans are usually ok.
Mind your labels, and if it says "natural flavoring," you might want to give the product manufacturer a call and see if the flavor has any natural meat in it.

any gummy candy liek gummy bears and gummy worms and stuff have gelatin and gelitan is made from pig skin.
whya re u a vegatarian? thats stupid. its unhealthy and very hard on you body. Theres a reason ur teeth are pointy. we are biologicly made to eat meat. And plants are living too so dotn say ur not killing living things. How do u know plants cant feel pain? how do u know plants dont have souls? Just cuz it doesnt move doesnt mean its not living. soem plants move too. If u stopepd movign should i stab u with a fork and say yummy salad? beign a vegitarian has no benefits to anything. Plus many animal popualtions are to big for the enviroment there in. Would u rather have them shto and die isntantly? or have them slowly die forms tarvation and disease.

Raman noodles, the noodles are fried in animal fat but do not say so on there ingredients.
gravy or mashed potatoes in restaurants sometimes have chicken broth.
watch out for all soups most have meat bases even if they say vegetable (not vegetarian)
Also all cheeses have a product called rennet (I think thats how its spelled) in them, which is the lining of a cows stomach. they have to kill the cow to get it. So buy organic cheese and check the ingredients, if they list enzymes or rennet don't buy it.

i also do not eat gelatin, (i dont eat pork). some of the things, that i know that have gelatin are: skittles candy, (although they claim its not pork gelatin). cereals, poptarts and yogurt. i hope everyone helped you find out something you didnt know.

yeah LOTS of soups, surprisingly even a lot of potato soups (at restaurants). Also not yet mentioned, many of the chocolate covered donuts (gems, etc.) have lard in them. I think if you sign up for the free veg starter kit from peta, they have a list of things in it that have the hidden meat. :)

Watch out for lasagna. I'm a vegeterain and I once ate lasagna only to discover, two bites later, that there was meat there. Nasty and not so great.

Check the nutrition label on whatever you buy if you are going to be so thorough. You now butter has milk. Baked goods usually have eggs, butter or milk.

A lot of soups, beans, and chillies have beef stock in them.
...Just read the labels -- don't buy anything that has things you object to.
