Check out your local phone book under "bars" and "bartending" for schools. Also try a google search for "Bartending Universities" in your area. If push comes to shove, most restaurants hire their bartenders from within, so try to start as a server and learn as much about the different drinks as you can and try to get a spot behind the bar!

There use to be bartending schools, but I don't know what happen to those commercials. Your best bet is to self study, and apply for a position as bar-back at one of the local hot-spots and come up through the ranks. Let the employer know you have the intentions to be a full time bartender. Most high end bars keep their bartenders close and groom them themselves, because bartenders can cause a lot of revenue loss if one gets back there and gives away drinks.

Definately teach yourself. Any chain restaurants will hire you to bartend with no experience and they will train you. Bar tending schools are a big waste of time and money.

ABC (the liquour store) has classes. I wouldn't pay too much for them at other places.

How did I get my bartending job?

Bought a "Dummies guide to bartending" taught myself everything and then lied about working places. When they asked to check my references, I said no. And they still hired me.

Go to a dive bar. Thats the best place to get your first experience as a bartender.
