an amusement park: roller coasters are the perfect setting for that "Over the Hill" theme
a sports stadium: everyone can wear their black "Over the Hill" t-shirts while knocking back hot dogs and beer and watching baseball
a renaissance faire: have the whole group dress as pirates (you can provide the eye patches & scarves as party favors) & head out to a ren faire for turkey legs & meade
middle eastern restaurant: reserve a table close to the dance floor on a night when the belly dancer is making an appearance; have a middle eastern Mezzeh or two ready as soon as they get there so everyone can sample the fare, and don't forget to finish off the evening by relaxing with a hookah pipe or two!
a dinner theatre: find a theatre company that does audience-participation performances and serves dinner; provide your own birthday cake at intermission & ask the audience to join you in singing "happy birthday"!
a public park: have an "adult" weiner roast with hot dogs and an "adult pinata"; guests can sign up to bring hot dogs & the fixings, drinks, etc..., if you're trying to limit costs, then just pick one of the guys to do the grilling. For entertainment, bring a pinata stuffed with adults toys (e.g. condoms, mini containers of personal lubricant, pop rocks, AA batteries, etc...) and use a fish-net stocking as blindfold! (P.S. If you do this at home or in a private club, you can use a giant dildo to hit the pinata!)

For my 40th, we had a pinata filled with grownup favors like miniature bottles of scotch, hot sauce, golf tees, pretty votive candles, boxed truffles, etc. The pinata was in the shape of a high heeled shoe. It was lots of fun to see everyone (even the shy people) take a swing or two. We didn't blindfold anyone - it's hard enough to break open a pinata when you actually hit it - just let people take turns taking a whack. There were about 45 people there, and everyone got at least 2 or 3 items. The person who shopped for the goodies had fun picking out stuff she thought our crowd would like, obviously you can make it very specific to your friends.
I've also been to a bowling 40th and must say everyone there had a smile on their face. The spouse of the birthday girl bought her an actual bowling shirt from an embroidery company with her name over the pocket. Very fun.
Have a great party!

RE:
I'm planning a 40th birthday party and need creative ideas for the location.?
I want something besides just a dinner at a restaurant. Food and alcohol need to be provided. I'm considering everything from a bowling party to a winery dinner. Any suggestions other than a house party are appreciated! Attendance will be 30-40 people.

Hey My husband's bday is in November! Being in the San Fran area this is easy for you! Well, you can go to Napa for the Wine Train or there's the Murder Mystery train. Or, how about those wine dinners in the Napa caves?
For my hubby's 40th, I did a really nice chinese banquet for him. I invited all his family and close friends and we had 6 tables of 10. He's not chinese, but well, I am.
The invitations were printed on asian paper (purchased at chinatown) and I went to stamps.com and got the personalized postage stamps with his face on it (he was posing with Mickey Mouse!).
The banquet was not very expensive. $170 for a 7 or 8 course meal with soda/wine and they were all my husband's favorite foods. You can negotiate the menu and cost, but the preset banquet menu was the most economical.
The dessert was fortune cookies with a message from my hubby to the guests. Also I had a cake with his face on it... 1/2 of the cake with his baby picture, 1/2 with him recent. Albertson's can do the cake with the overlay and its edible.
Each couple received a CD with songs from the past... 1965's #1 hit was XXX and that was the year he was born. 1970 he graduated kindergarten, and the #1 hit was XXX.... 1994 he got married, and the #1 hit was XXX.
I picked 6 or 7 songs and then left 2005 as ???
You can go to iTunes for the songs and I burned them all myself. I got the labels, jewel cases and CD's at Best Buy. Took me about 2 hours to do them all.
The party was a success and then afterward, the younger people went partying and the old folks went home
Just a thought since there's so many good chinese places in the Bay area!

Why not a barn. They get mucked out and new straw thown so it isn't a big yuck to walk around. A few tressle tables and some chairs from a rental company, and have kegs of beer and some wine, and a real good bar-be-que caterer or a friend can do it. Most barns aren't used much so for a little money ($50) the owner will let you do it.

Around here, people rent out the Beach Club. There is an a deck that is connected to the beach so the guests can eat and drink while looking over the water. However, if you are not near a beach, you could take everyone to a game, to whichever sports team the birthday boy/girl likes. You could go to an amusement park, a rollerskating rink, bowling ally, or sailing. Dave and Busters is a really fun place to go where you can eat/drink and play games.

You're having your 40th birthday, do something different. Have a party that has like the whole 1940's era to it. That would be hot yo, like you all dress up in the old "jive," and "swing dancing outfits." that would be nice. That would be extra nice, and for ur 50th birthday, do the same thing, except a 1950s era.

You can always rent a nice banquet room @ a hotel or a hall. You can have a dinner, music, dancing. Bowling is always fun, you just need to make sure you reserve way in advance to accommodate that amount of guest. You can also do a Karaoke Party. Depending on where you live you can have a beach party. Hope this was of some help.
Good Luck.
