Fresh fish shouldn't smell. If you go fishing and you pull a fish out of the water and smell them. You'll find they have very little odor other than that of the water they were swimming. If a fish smells like what people think fish smells like the fish is spoiled. You are actually smelling decaying bacteria. Avoid that. Fish should feel firm with no discoloring. The eyes on the fish should be clear. Preferably you would buy fish that are still alive or from someone who is actually a fisherman. Grocery stores are the last place you should look.

Different fishes have slightly different smells. But any fish, if its not fresh, will smell bad.
Always get the absolute freshest fish you can get. The best is to catch it yourself and cook it immediately on a fire or barbecue.
But if you're buying fish, its worth asking whoever is selling the fish, when it was caught, where its come from, etc, etc.
But maybe you're one of those people, even if it is fresh fish, the smell will always put you off. Some food smells always put people off, i.e. some people really hate the smell of beetroot and would never eat it.

Fish when fresh doesn't smell bad. Like anything else, it will smell bad when it is in the state of decomposition or to put it another way - when it is rotting! Go to a fish monger and have him or her show you how to test for fresh fish. You will be advised to use your senses especially those of smell, sight and touch to determine freshness. Enjoy and good luck!

If fish smells bad then it is not fresh and you should not eat it especially if it smells like butt before you cook it. Fresh fish should not smell.

Because NOT FRESH fish has bacteria growing on it which thrives on warm, moist surfaces.
That's why a good fish monger keeps his fish cold and heavily iced to retard (slow) the growth of bacteria. Bacteria is in the air always surrounding us.

Your butt smells like stinky fish??!!??!!
Scary!!
Anyway, as far as fish goes, generally speaking the older it gets the more it stinks! So if you buy it, go for the less stinky specimens...!
