I have always been prone to respiratory
illnesses.I have had pneumonia once, bronchitis three times, and often my
colds go to the chest.About 2 years ago,I started having a cough that came
and went.8 months ago,the cough came back worse than ever, and I started
experiencing wheezing and difficulty breathing whenever emotionally
upset and during strenuous exercise.I have been to the doctor several
times,he put me on Pulmicort and Albuterol for 6 months and said it was
probably allergies and they would go away. The medicines helped, but as soon
as I stopped taking them the problem got worse again.
My mother thinks it might be asthma, since 2 of my father's siblings
have it. Should I get a second opinion,or was the doctor right?

You need to go to a pulmonologist. He will be better to diagnose you correctly. It sounds like you might have asthma, in which case you would need to be on medicine long-term or at least have an inhaler on hand for flare-ups. I have asthma and believe me, it is serious business. Go to a pulmonologist, please. Check out the site below for further information.

hi i just responded to your other question. whatever i tell you hear may not be the same as the other one because your information is quite misleading.

number 1: if this is asthma, your doctor should have tests done on you -- to find out where you are most allergic to. what i've seen so far is they put a couple of drops on a patient's arm, and wait for a couple of minutes -- if there is something you are allergic to, that area where that specific allergen was dropped -- will turn pink and itch. that's how they do allergy tests. being emotionally upset and exercise CAN trigger asthma -- but it is NOT solely based on that -- there could be other allergens that you are allergic to, and emotions and exercise just "induce" it -- it means you are so sensitive to asthma attacks, it is easily triggered by emotions and exercise. the only way we can find out if you go to a respectable doctor who will do all these tests on you, including a pulmonary function test to see if it really IS asthma.

second -- what made me think twice about asthma is because you said that you were prone to bronchitis, and you said that the cough came and went -- does it last for about 2 weeks - would go away, then come back again? did you have this problem for about 4 times a year? every year? because another thing that we can worry about besides asthma is chronic bronchitis -- this is categorized as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease -- asthma is one of them) you also wheeze when you have chronic bronchitis. (chronic meaning repetitive).

my suggestion -- when you're having an attack, write down whatever is surrounding you. are you exposed to dust? what time did it happen? when? and what date? is it during the springtime. it's really hard to tell unless you have tests done on you.

You are the classical example of a victim of food allergies. Have you ever went on a dairy, wheat, soy and corn free diet? If not, you are in for a pleasant suprise. Most asthma/allergy conditions are a direct result of ingesting these supposed "health foods." Nothing can be farther from the truth. Go to www.dogtorj.net for the details. The site is mind blowing, and absolutely liberating.

Also, my partner has cystic fibrosis, and she has suffered from lung disease for years.....she coughs 100 times or more a day. What we have found to be a life-saver is the following: 1) N-acetyl-cysteine.....a precursor to glutathione, the main detoxifying enzyme in the liver, and a wonderful mucous dissolver. 2) BREATHE, the mycomedicinal by New Chapter, that literally fills the lungs with blood, oxygen and chi, within a few hours. 3) Coenzyme q10 4) Tumeric extract

I wish you good luck.

I don't know how old you are, but once you get pneumonia or bronchitis, you will always be prone to repeat episodes since these illnesses scar the lungs....unfortunately, alot of allergies also mimic asthma....I always believe in a second opinion, sometimes a third...sometimes diseases can be illusive and hard to diagnosis...if all else fails, try holistic medicine to help build your immune system...good luck

You need to see a Pulmonologist. Second opinions are always a great option. Speak openly with your doctor about what is on your mind and what you feel the problem could be. One doctor will not know "everything". Sometimes even a third opinion is a good idea.

Do you smoke? Do you have any allergies? Are you working in any enviroment that could cause respiratory prob?
I would def go see a pulmonary doctor.. they would really be able to find out.
You may just have Reactive Airway, which clinicaly is the same as asthma.

Get a second opinion.

There are a lot of other possibilities besides asthma, but it would help to rule out as much as possible.

Have him look for cystic fybrosis, also.

Good luck. - Stuart

Yes get the second opinion and it should be from a pulmonologist. Chronic lung issues can be a tell tail sign of something else that would need to be addressed right away.
