You can cough up blood for a variety of reasons. First and foremost as a smoker the lining in your trachea becomes very irritated, and as the cilia or Lining wears away you may experience bloody sputum "spit." really it could be anything from cancer, to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, COPD, (similar to Emphysema) or CHF Congestive Heart failure, which basically is the build up of fluid in your lungs due to your hearts inability to remove it because of injury.

It depends on how much blood. It could be a sign of something bad going on in your lungs. You may want to visit your doctor for chest xrays. If it is very little blood just a trace of it...then it most likely an irritated chest from the constant coughing. I quit smoking 8/8/05 cold turkey. I smoked a pack a day for 20 years. The cravings are mostly gone by the 3rd or 4th day. You can do it! If I can you certainly can! It really is not that hard...the first 48 hrs are the worst then it gets better and better every day. I crave a cig about once a month now and that craving is in my head one second and out the next. It is hard to make it through that first 48 hrs but you can do it. Believe me you will be able to sleep better at night with no crackling noises in your breathing!!

Go to the doctor. My grandma did this after quitting smoking for about 5 years and it was cancer. She died about 11 weeks after the diagnosis. Tuberculosis can also cause coughing up blood. It could be something as dumb as a bloody nose...dripping into your throat at night and you coughing that up a few days later. But I would not take a chance. Go see a doctor and get a referral to a pulmonolgist just to be sure.

When capillaries (the tiniest blood vessels in the human body) get ruptured in your lungs and trachea, you cough up blood. And cigarette smoke is loaded with irritants.

See a doctor, and get rid of the cigarettes: You know the things are hurting you, and the price of them has gone through the roof.

Good luck!
