i know that Franco banned the manufacure and sale of many spanish cheeses, as he banned most traditional cottage industries, does any one have info on this and the smuggling of cheese that resulted?

That's a difficult one... I know there was smuggling after the spanish civil war,...mainly because of the lack of basic produce in the country at that time, followed up with WWII on the rest of the continent.
One of the products often smuggled and sold illegally ... was cheese This was called "Estraperlo" (the sales...not the cheese). But most everything was sold that way...cheese, spanish ham and sausages, coffee, fruit, vegetables, etc... Even fountain pens !
I'll see if I find anything else and if I do I'll re-edit this,,
