Genital warts are very contagious and are spread during oral, vaginal, or anal sex with an infected partner. They are transmitted by skin-to-skin contact during vaginal, anal, or (rarely) oral sex with someone who is infected. About two-thirds of people who have sexual contact with a partner with genital warts will develop warts, usually within 3 months of contact. Rarely, genital warts also can develop in your mouth or throat if you have oral sex with an infected person.

Genital warts are caused by the Human Papilloma virus. It doesn't get into the blood stream, but it is found in the tissues. It is spread by sexual contact. It is one of the most common sexually transmited diseases. Unfortunately even using a condom does not gaurentee we won't catch or spread it. It is also responsible for 70% of the cases of cervical cancer . They have now developed a vaccine to help with certain strains of hpv, including the strain that causes cervical cancer. Usually in a year or so hpv will clear up on it's own. The warts can be removed by a doctor to help with the cosmetic issues. I hope this little bit of info helped.

Like the other comments stated, you can get them by genital contact with someone who also has them, you can also get them by oral sex as well. Another important issue, is contracting genital warts by HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). You can contact this and not know it, and the genital warts can come soon or after a while after contracting the virus. The genital warts are curable. but not the virus. You can also get genital warts by the herpes virus wich can also be contracted through kissing, intercourse and oral sex. Just be protected and always get tested!!
