My children seems to have blood sugar related problems (like hypoglycemia), but urine tests don't show diabetes. The pediatrician has only tested urine and I don't know what else to ask for or what specialist I could go to for a more detailed look at their symptoms. One child takes medication for seizures and the medication is also an insulin mimic. The other child also seems to have symptoms which seem to fit blood sugar issues but does not have seizures. There is a strong family history of diabetes. Is there a "metabolic" specialist I could look for? Thanks for any direction.

I have type 3 diabetes and the way I was test was a fasting glucose.and this was done by request of my family doctor. I started out hypoglycemia and it progressed to diabetes. Take the children to a family practice Doctor or look in the phone book for a diabetes dr. Just a urine test is not enough to show diabetes.

The Glucose Tolerance Test will verify hypoglycemia. However, expect some resistance. I went through MRI's, CT Scans, Brain Wave testing and all kinds of tests before they thought to do the GTT. It is simple test, ask your pediatrician to order it for your children. It will be painful as it involves a lengthy fast (10 hours of no food for me) and blood draws at 30 minute intervals. Also, hypoglycemia is not widely accepted yet. But, they will admit there is a blood sugar processing issue if it is present. Push hard for it now. I went through a decade of illness and 1 year of hallucinations and seizures before I was diagnosed. I still have seizures and blood sugar problems. But, I can control and combat them without fear. I know now that my health is not in jeapordy as long as I get my blood sugar back on track.

You would want to find an endocrinologist. Preferably one who specializes in diabetes care and management. I am diabetic and have two doctors, one for general care and one only for diabetes. You might want to check and see if they are more familiar with type 1 (juvenile onset) or type 2 diabetes. The two typically have very different treatment programs.

If their PCP has run all the tests then I would seek a dietician who will help place them on a proper regiment after doing a bunch of tests to see what their eating habits are and balance the nutrients and help with the blood sugar issue.
