You can say it either way. My Grandma also says die-a-beet-iss, but then again, she also says "warsh" instead of wash and "goom" instead of "gum". Old people can be weird.

according to the dictionary, it can be properly pronounced either way, but is spelled the same.

Similar to to-may-toe or to-mah-toe (tomato)
