Yes, Butter is not nearly as bad as Margarine. Choose between Fat or Cancer but I guess once in a great while isn't going to kill you but I don't have it at all.

People are answering this question as if the dozens of brands of margarine are all the same thing. Then again, being a vegan, I am notorious for reading labels and knowing what is actually IN my food. Not to sound all uppity. :)
Anyway, butter is almost pure fat. So is margarine. Butter has animal cholesterol, which raises your LDL and HDL levels, increasing both your "good" and your "bad" cholesterol. Margarine can OFTEN contain partially-hydorgenated oils, which lower your good cholesterol, and raise your bad cholesterol. However, I buy non-hydrogenated margerine, which is not poison and actually tastes better than both butter and mainstream hydrogenated margarine — Earth Balance, Soy Garden, and a few others that you can find in most health food stores (and increasingly in Safeways and Krogers) are good choices.
And how can margarine by "one molecule away from plastic"? Margarine isn't a molecule, and in fact its ingredients are many, and each contain their own molecultes.
I swear, sometimes the amount of disinformation requires a machete to cut through!

Yes misinformation is out there and multiplying. Like that old line about veganism being healthy. Just because margarine contains omega3 doesn't stop the hydrogenated oils clogging up your system and causing cholesterol to accumulate. Butter contains animal cholesterol. However humans have evolved over millions of years to eat a high cholesterol diet. The cholesterol myth has been well busted. It is the trans fat in margerine and other processed frankenfat products that cause all types of cholesterol to build up. Cholesterol build up is a symptom of trans fat intake. Cholesterol is dangerous only if eating with trans fat.
If you truly believe margarine to be better please read my description below or do a google search.
Magarine was invented during one of the world wars and was originally made from tallow (beef fat).
Margarine is made from black sludge that has been separated from the good oils that go to make bottled cooking oil. It is hydrogenated, which does change the molecular structure of the sludge into a plastic-like substance. Hydrogenation turn the liquid sludge into a semi-solid state. Heavy metal catalysts are needed for the hydrogenation process - zinc, mercury, lead, cadmium (yummy vegan goodness!!).
Then the black sludge is bleached using most often chlorine bleach.
The left over white jelly oil is then coloured yellow and emulsified then shipped to retarded vegans to spread all over thier organic lentil bread in the morning thinking it's healthy.
Butter is better.

Harvard University researchers, in a 1994 study, reported that people who consumed hydrogenated oils, which are contained in many brands of margarine, had nearly twice the risk of heart attacks as those who consumed little or no hydrogenated oils.
Several large studies, including the Nurses’ Health Study conducted by Harvard School of Public Health has indicated a strong link between earlier death and consumption of high amounts of trans-fat.
The American Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the American Heart Association (AHA) all have recommended people to limit intake of trans-fat. For this reason, margarine manufacturers have been reducing the amount of trans-fats in their products since the mid-nineties. The US federal government requires by 2006 the labelling of all food in such a way as to disclose amounts of trans-fat in products. Many brands label their products legally now as "zero grams" trans-fat, which in fact means less than 500 mg trans-fat per serving

well there is a choice between butter and margarine. from my understanding butter is bad for your heart and margarine can give you cancer. It is not good to have too much of either so what I do is get a blend of them both. It is called devondale soft and it spreads straight from the fridge.

I've used steroids for my asthma(I have it real bad) many times in my life.Unfortunately no one told me of the long term side affects. I have glaucoma from them(in 2 yrs my vision went from 20/40 to 20/70.And I'm going blind(irreversible). Steroids are only ok to take under medical/doctors care.when absolutely necessary. The effects mentioned above are also true ! Don't ever take them as performance inhancers!!!

Margarine is now on the baddie list. I have heard it said that it is one molecule away from plastic. When you consume it, your body can't metabolize it, so it causes a lot of free radicals to be running around in your system.
