You should look for a local place where you can volunteer your time. They have all sorts of places that send food and clothing, etc. It's free and you can still help!

I'm in a similar position. I collect money door to door for the Red Cross and Oxfam once a year. There are many other charities to choose from, like World Vision, the Tear Fund, Caritas. If you've got the time and energy, you could do a sponsored thing, like walk from one end of the country to the other. Or offer to work for money which you'll donate to a charity. Plenty of people who wouldn't usually offer you work will make an exception for a charity.
