Being 42, you should think about having a regular annual checkup and/or physical. Make your situation known to your personal doctor, and they'll be better at letting you know what's going on. You could possibly be over-exerting yourself during your workouts, or work out too often which puts added stress on your heart, causing it to work much harder. But contact your personal doctor. For your sake and your loved ones.

do you consume a lot of caffeine? take any herbs or medications or illicit drugs? It sounds that you may be having something often called a palpitation...where your heart may skip a beat or have an extra beat. When you relax, it may be that is when you can concentrate and feel it. Otherwise, you are too busy to realize it happening. If you do not consume any of the above substances, it may just be a new variation that can be perfectly harmless. However, I would mention it to your physician. They may recommend you getting an echocardiogram ("ultrasound" of the heart" or an EKG to rule any problems out.

It does not sound like a problem to me but if you are concerned which you are, then go to the doctor.

Most people don't notice their heart beat until they do just what you were doing. and I certainly hope that it is beating more than 1 time for every twenty breaths...

Sounds like you're having what's known as palpitations. Could be caused by a number of things. Honestly, sounds like you need to get an electrocardiogram(EKG) especially considering you'r age. Think if you'r family has any history of heart problems. Anyone above the age of 35-40 needs to get an annual check up, man.

When you are relaxed you can hear & feel your heart
beating more than when you are busy & active. Once
you notice it then everytime you do sit back & relax you
are going to listen for it. If you are concerned ask your
physician to listen to your heart the next time you see
him, or make an appointment and get it over with so you
can really relax!!

everyone has an extra beat now and then .. you may be sensing when your heart skips or has and extra beat.. it may be nothing.. however it could be an arrythmia problem such as atrial fib or ventricular fib.. you could get an event monitor to wear over a month and when you feel your heart deep beating push a button and it will store the ekg rhythm .. and down load it later so a doctor can determine if it is something to worry about.. good luck to you

Ahhh...palpitations....taking any meds that may speed up the ole heart? History of heart problems in the family? How about heart murmur? Possibly that the heart is still working hard when you are at rest? Please, Please have it checked out. Many men your age think they are in perfect shape-one day they sit back in the ole easy chair to relax...and they never get up. By the way-have you checked your blood pressure lately? Have you had a physical?

Make an appointment with your doctor if you think it is abnormal, don't mess around with heart problems, it could be the early warning signs of heart problems especially if it runs in your family.

every 20 breaths would be about 30 seconds...if your heart only beats every 30 seconds, you'd be dead......sometimes I can hear my heart beating too, depends on where you are and possibly if the chair is a sound conductor.....unless you have pain, it's prob nothing
