Poi alone is bland because it was used as a starch (like rice or pasta) in old days Hawaii so it's meant to be eaten with salty meat or veggies. There is another delicious way to eat poi that my grandma used to make for me. It's called a Poi Cocktail (don't know why because there is no alcohol?). Basically you take poi (it will be sort of crumbly in the bag), mix it with whole milk until it is thick & creamy to the texture that you desire and then just stir in sugar to taste. It's very delicious, like pudding or a milkshake. I make mine to the texture that I can eat with a spoon.
In So. Ca, there is a Hawaiian/Japanese market in Torrance that flies in poi every week direct from Hawaii. It's called Marukai. There are several locations but only the Torrance one carries poi (to my knowledge) as that location caters to a Hawaiian population and has several isles dedicated to Hawaiian food. It's a membership only market (you can still go into browse w/o a membership, but you won't be able to buy) but it's only about $10 annually, and it's high quality items. The Torrance location is also big enough that they sell furniture and household items.

I don't know where you can find it, but most people who are not used to it, don't like it.
It is pretty bland and is eaten with other foods. Basically, it's a starch to eat with more flavorful foods. (Like you would do with rice or potatoes.)
Poi is mashed steamed or boiled taro root. It is served as a kind of paste---varying from thick to thin.

It's pretty bland & starchy. If you live in SD, you can go to Sam Choy's. Also, Roy's sometimes has poi.
