What to you want to order? A portion of gyro meat on a plate or the pita bread with gyro, tomato, tzatziki etc?
For the first one just say yeero. For the second one say peeta yeero or souvlaki geero.
I hope you are in Greece to order that because in any other place in the world I have seen with many other names. Usually I hear gyro sandwich outside Greece.

That's funny. I have a shirt that my b/f wore at a Greek restaurant that he worked at. On the back it says "I'm okay, Gyro-K". That has always helped me with the pronunciation of that word...it's pronounced like euro.

just say ' I'll have one of those' and point to the picture and he will say ...'oh you mean a gyro" if you are not brave enough to ask the guy how to pronounce his Greek word...how do you get up the courage to order in the first place?

I've always called it a "Jye-ro," but my husband says it like "hero" and gives me a knowing look. So, even if it's wrong, I'm not going to give in and pronounce it his way! ;-)

I think it pronounced "hero" but then I'm not Greek. They are great sandwiches, however. If you enjoy Greek food, try some baklava. You can make it at home....delish!
