I have a friend who just found out he has herpes we sleep in the same bed together alot and share everything. I went to the doctor to get checked and he told me without an outbreak you can't tell weather you have it or not. If I don't have it what should I do to protect myself, if anything, without making him feel any more different then he already does. And what can I tell him to make him feel better about the whole thing? And what should I look for as a girl to know weather I have it or not, can it look and pop just like a pimple or is it more like a blister? Any information you can give or any referance would help alot. Thank you

No you will not get genital herpes just by laying next to someone with the virus. To get genital herpes you have to have direct skin to skin contact or have sex with them. So unless you are rubbing your genital areas together, or having sex with that person you ARE NOT going to get it.

And your doctor is right for the most part. Usually doctors diagnose genital herpes by a physical exam, and also a pap smear for women. There is a blood test that they can do, but they have be shown to be really inaccurate, giving negative results, when you do in fact have the virus. The first or primary outbreak usually occurs 2-14 days after being infected. So unless you have had an outbreak, chances are you probably don't have the virus.

There is nothing you can really do to help your friend, just be there for him. It's not a deadly STD, and it is totally treatable with medication.

The sores caused by genital herpes are extremely painful on your first outbreak. They sort of looks like cysts or blisters rather than small pimples. You can "pop" them, but that is REALLY bad to do. If you pop them, the puss and fluid from them can get on the skin around it and cause more sores to appear! The best thing a person can do when they are having an outbreak is to leave them alone! Take the medicine the doctor prescribes you and don't touch your sores! They will heal better the less you touch them and irritate them. And ALWAYS wash your hands after you have touched them.

You can't tell if someone has genital herpes just by looking at them, or their genital area. Even if they show no signs of the virus, like sores, they can still be "shedding" the virus, which means they can pass it to you. Always wear a condom, or if you are a girl, insist the guy does. Even though condoms are not 100%, they are the safest thing you can do to protect yourself from STDS, other than abstinence.

OOh, another touchy subject. There a few strains of herpes that affect different parts of the body (all of which can and, in the case of most herpes sufferers, probably have been used to perform a sexual act - simple truth) and show up, during 'outbreaks', as skin ulcers or rashes. Herpes, being classified as an STD requires direct, or indirect, bodily contact in order to be transferred from one person to another. In most cases contact with the affected area must be made to allow the herpes virus to be transferred. in other cases wearing the undergarments, or using un-sanitized instruments that have come into contact with affected areas, have also been know to spread the virus. It is true that the only way to tell if you've got it or not is if you have an outbreak. It is also true, regrettably, that you can get it from someone who is not having an outbreak. This means that you can get it from someone who has, as yet, not shown signs of having it. Now the good news: while making contact (your parts to their parts - mouth included) does put you at a higher risk for contracting herpes, just sleeping next to someone with it does not.

My best friend has had genital herpes for about eight months now, and it's been really rough. She's had about 7 outbreaks. Everywhere I read it says it stops flaring up so much after time, but its not getting less frequent for her. She's been on Antiviral meds the whole time, too. She also has type 1 diabetes which she has had her whole life, which really weakens her immune system. Will it ever get better?

But after a friend share this video everything has changed.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.
The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid—such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.

You're not going to catch it by laying next to him. He has to be experiencing a breakout with blisters and have sex with you. There is a medicine he can get that will help him not have breakouts as often...Its called Valtrex......it suppresses the virus.. This virus can lay dormant for years without the person knowing they have it. But they can still pass it on to someone else. Thats why protecting yourself by using a condom is very important. Tell your friend that it is nothing to be ashamed of or feel bad about. 2 out of every 5 people you come across everyday has this virus. Just make sure you do your part....take precautions.

You will know if you have it, trust me. I don't think you would get it unless you both sleep naked together and rub his genitals on yours. If you are having sex you might have it. It is mostly dangerous when he is having an outbreak but you can still get it if he isn't. Try a search on health.yahoo.com
