No, actually I hadn't eaten anything about since about four hours before, and then it was a sauage and egg bisquit.

I'm about six feet tall and weigh 280 lbs. I started the South Beach diet, which is kinda like the atkins, but have only been on it a week or so.

you might need to be on insulin briefly (or longer) to get BGs controlled NOW. Avandaryl and lifestyle changes will probably have a big effect on control but 477 was a WOW random BG! my advise would be to: 1. follow your docs advise, especially if your doc is an endocrinologist! (i am a PA/CDE endo) 2. dietary changes. 3. exercise (carefully, just become more active) 4. make a date with a diabetes educator, we are awesome [demure ;-0] 5. realize that YOU are the # 1 player on your healthcare team. YOU can make a HUGE difference in your health and future health. 6. health is pretty dang important --- do what is needed to get there. 7. good luck - you can do it !

That's about four times higher than it should be--EVEN if you've just eaten a lot of candy (as the other poster suggested)! Given that you are so young (and you don't appear to be obese in your photo) this sounds to me (and I'm not a medical person) like Type I diabetes, which requires insulin shots. But, OTOH, it sounds as if you've seen the doctor already and s/he must think that you have Type II diabetes, because you've been given a Rx for Avandia.

Given that you have already seen the doctor, and given that you are on meds, I have to ask: Are you modifying your diet at all? To my knowledge, in order for Type II Diabetes meds to work, you MUST eat a low-carb diet (like the Atkins Diet or the Stillman Diet).

I would skip going to your general physician and go straight to the endocronologist. They know what to do w/your body way more than the cold/flu doctor.

That is sure a question for the doctor. I am sure they are watching your sugar closely. When they get it regulated, you will feel better.

I'm not so sure Avandia is going to control blood sugar that high. Please contact your physician. High blood sugars regularly will do damage to your eyes, kidneys, etc... so you've got to get it under control.
