It completely depends on what the meal is but for a white wine try a Pinot Grigio and for a red wine try a Sangiovese. Only do a heavy Italian red like a Barolo if you're having a heavy meal (like steak, or veal chops, or lamb).

Depends on what meat is in the meal, but a great Italian white is Santa Margarita Pinot Grigio.

If you're serving a dish with a red sauce, go with a red wine (a good Italian varietal is sangiovese - I like Estancia Pinot Noir, too, because it's sort of plummy and fruity and goes well with tomato sauce, in my opinion).

White Sauce....try a Pinot Grigio.
Red Sauce....try a Merlot. Go with a Kendall Jackson Vintner's reserve.
