Has anybody heard of this Japanese food?

My friend claims the best Japanese food he ever had was called SKEE-YAKI, not suki-yaki. Please forgive my spelling. Has anybody heard of it and can you tell me a little about how to make it. He has tried to order it in Japanese restaurants but no luck.

"yaki" is the Japanese suffix (or prefix if you like, since compound Japanese words are back-to-front) for "roasted", or cooked inside an aoven rather than on top of it. so you have teri-yaki & suki-yaki & maki-yaki & teppan-yaki....etc etc.... Your friend has probably only tried to order it in "American" Japanese restaurants (which are very often staffed by Chinese or Korean people), because a Japanese person would indeed have recognised "Skee-Yaki" as what Westerners call "Suki-Yaki" (see recipe below)

Sukiyaki
(pronounced: ski-ya-key) Ingredients:
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup sake
1/3 cup sugar
vegetable shortening (lite)
1 lb. beef tenderloin
2 cups 2-inch bias-sliced scallions
4 cups large dice napa cabbage
1/2 lb. fresh spinach, cut into strips
2 cups drained shirataki noodles
12 large mushrooms, sliced
1 lb. large dice tofu
1 cup sliced bamboo shoots
Directions:
Combine soy sauce, sake, and sugar-mix well, set aside.
Freeze beef until firm and slice into paper-thin strips.
Heat beef suet or fat in a skillet, over a moderately-high flame.
Add beef, heat and stir just until blush disappears. Remove from heat. Remove beef from pan. Arrange vegetables into separate mounds in skillet. Cover with beef strips. Pour sauce mixture over all. Place over a medium flame. Heat just until vegetables are tender. Serve hot, with hot cooked rice.


(Your spelling is just fine! This word is not originally written using the Western alphabet, so unles you can type kanji, the best you can do is approximate!)

No, there's no such thing!!
HOWEVER!! Living in Japan like me, you notice that when Japanese people say 'suki' they normally pronounce it with a VERY short 'u' ... so it does sound a lot like 's'ki'!

Add that to the fact that your friend probably isn't IN Japan, and, as someone else mentioned, most Japanese restaurants outside Japan are not 'authentic' Japanese restaurants - they're run by Koreans, or anyone who feels like OPENING a Japanese restaurant - the pronunciation of the waiters probably wasn't up to much either! So it's not surprising that he's a bit muddled about it..!

♡I've never seen it spelled quite that way, but the pronunciation would be correct of most Japanese people saying 'sukiyaki'. My hubby is Japanese and I'm American and even I pronounce it this way- 's-kiyaki'. (I also do this with the words 'suki', to like and 'daisuki', to be very fond of something. I tend to say 'ski' and daiski'.) The people in the Japanese restaurants may not understand if they are not native Japanese. Or they may not have it on their menu. I make sukiyaki at home from time to time, we live in Japan and both hubby and I love it.
