I'd go with a dry white like a sauvignon blanc or a nice pinot grigio but that's just my taste. Some people prefer a sweeter wine like a chardonnay. It might be a good idea to have both so everyone gets what they like. If you're going to cook with it then use the sauvignon blanc. Don't use cooking wine. If you can't drink it then for goodness sakes don't use it to cook with.

If the chicken dish is cooked in red wine such as coq au vin try a or if the dish has heavy garlic or mushrooms, a simple beaujolais from beaujalais villages or a french pinot noir, if it is cooked with white wine, lemon and herbs try a french chardon
nay, vouvrey or sauvingon blanc.

Right now Pinot Gris (in french)or Pinot Grigo (in italian) is the same wine depending on the bottler (usa). It is the largest selling wine in the world. It is medium bodied not to to dry arid or to fruity sweet. It is a white wine made from a red grape giving this wine the ability to do the work of both and appeal to many pallets. A good table bottle is around $ 12.00 bucks. It practically fool proof.

Personally, with a white wine - Chardonnay or Gewurztraminer - depending on how your doing the chicken. For a red wine - Gamay Noir or Pinot Noir. Gamay Noir is used in Beaujolais and so it's lighter and fruitier than a Shiraz/Syrah or Zinfandel which are better for steaks.

Viognier is one of my personal favorite white wines with a French meal..Tropical fruit flavors and a creamy mouthfeel truly complement the richness of many a French chicken entree. Viognier can be as full-bodied as an oaky Chardonnay, but is fruitier. Its rich, intense flavor is wonderful!!

For whites, a Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc works. For reds, try a Pinot Noir.
