It depends on whether it is wood, plastic or other. I know they say you shouldn't, but I put my small wooden one in the dishwasher. They say you shouldn't because it will dry it out and eventually crack it but I have done it for a long time. I just saw Rachel Raye (is that the right spelling?) on Oprah, say that you aren't ever supposed to cut meat on a wooden board. If you don't you can just clean with lemon juice, and wipe with damp rag. Re-oil with olive oil. If you have a plastic board and it will fit in your dishwasher, then you should. That is the one you should use for meat because it isn't pourous and the bacteria can't get in. You should definitely disinfect often if you can't get it in dishwasher. Good Luck!

Wash with worm or hot water and your regular dishwashing detergent - is usually sufficient. If you really have an unusual concern use a MILD MIX of bleach, wear gloves.
Do not mistake the wear on the cutting board that comes from use, with uncleanness - after you've used it awhile - it will not look new anymore, that is not the same as being unclean.
also use common sense - laminated wood cutting boards cannot stand the detergents, cleaning solvents, and hot water as long as the boards made of the new composite materials can.

If it's wood get rid of it because there's no way of getting rid of all the Bactria in the wood. If it's acrylic then just wash it in hot soapy water, rinse well and dry right away. That's all there is to cleaning a cutting board.

Regardless of the material it's made of, just wash it with hot soapy water, rinse it well, and dry it off (same as you would for any of your pots or pans). If it is wood, you actually don't have to worry as much about lingering bacteria since wood has actually shown the ability to eliminate any bacteria that winds up under the surface. If it is one of those plastic ones, it may need to be soaked in a bleach & water solution to remove any bacteria or discoloration that has taken up residence in some of the deeper cuts and scratches.

Cleaning a cutting board can be tricky. The best way to do it is soaking it in hot water with a strong anti-bacterial soap, that is if it is plastic. If it's wood you are stuck with using pure muscle (with soap and hot water of course), because it is too much of a risk to try to soak it. It could damage it.

I hold my wooden cutting board on an angle so that the lower bit is in the soapy water, then use a nylon scrubber. I figure that if the wood starts to deteriorate, I'll just buy a new one.
