The difference is the location of where they are. Is this true? They are exactly the same bug?

Pubic lice, or crabs, is an infestation of insect-like parasites that attach themselves to the pubic hair and other course hair on the body. The medical term for the infestation is called Pediculus Pubis and the parasite is called Pthirus pubis. Although pubic lice (crabs) come from the same family of parasites as head and body lice, they are not the same thing. Pubic lice can be cured with medicated shampoos and creams.

No, they are not exactly the same bug. A crab will not go to a person's head hair--and lice will not go to pubic hair. The same treatments, however, can be used for both.

Lice
Head lice are usually caught through head to head contact.

Lice are small insects of an eighth to a quarter inch length (3.5mm to 7mm). Head lice are found in the hair close to the scalp. This is where the females lay one 16th of an inch (1.8mm) sized eggs looking like tiny, white pips, called nits.

Lice can be difficult to see and comb out. Use a very fine-toothed comb or nit comb. Combing is easier if the hair is wet. Use an ordinary hair conditioner.

Even the most careful hygiene cannot stop you getting lice. So do not be ashamed of having lice.

Nits
The nits (eggs) stick to the hair. Nits are often confused with flakes of skin and white heads and other sebaceous material.

Pubic Lice

Pubic lice are another form of lice. They are caught through sexual contact. They do not just live in the pubic hair but also sometimes in beard or moustache hair and other body hair. Following infection it can sometimes take 1-2 weeks before trouble with itching starts.

You're correct, the only difference is the location. Although crabs is probably more difficult to deal with because of where it occurs.

They are the same thing, just different locations.

"Crabs" are harder to get rid of because of the location of the infestation.
