my grandpa has 1 lung and lives a easy-going life at a VERY low altitude where there is lots of humidity-its easier for him to breathe that way

if juju is a duke educated doctor he/she needs to return for a refresher course in medicine. do not believe this quack.

as far as your question is concerned you need to know a little about the lung anatomy. the trachea (windpipe as most people know it) bifurcates (divides) into the left and right mainstems, each feeding the respective left and right lung. surgically either lung can be cut out with the appropriate mainstem bronchus sealed off.

the chest is also divided on the inside so the left and right lung function independently although in some ways together. taking out one side (lung) does not interfere with the function and physiology of the one left behind. think of it like the kidney. you can live on one kidney, so you can live on one lung.

now, having one lung does decrease ones overall living ability but not to the point of just lying around in bed for the rest of your life, nor of being a high powered athlete. i have treated many people with the loss of one lung and they live very full and happy lives.
