I would suggest three things:
1. Lose weight. As the rate of obesity in the United States has grown, so has the incidence of diabetes. Losing weight greatly reduces your risk for diabetes.
2. Quit or at least reduce eating highly processed foods... fast foods, microwave foods, heat and eat foods, and bakery goods are but a few examples of such. As is commonly heard, "avoid the aisles; stick to the sides of the grocery store..." the sides being the place where you typically find unprocessed produce, meats, and dairy products. Take the time to learn how to cook foods naturally and healthily.
3. Every American should get their glucose tested at least once a year. It's easier to change your lifestyle and/or get on proper meds to prevent diabetes than to have to deal with it after you already have it.

Diabetes is a complex condition.

Women of low income get Diabetes 4 X more than people of middle and upper income brackets. Men of low income get Diabetes 40% more than men of middle and upper incomes.

Lower income Diabetics, even in countries like Canada, where Diabetes is covered under medicare, still are twice as likely to get complications from the disease than other people.

Twenty-five percent of Canadians (and a bit more of Americans) are considered to be obese. Obesity strikes low income more often than higher income.

How do we deal with the Diabetes epidemic? We need to make sure that people of lower income have the means to support a household, which would include being able to purchase healthier foods for themselves and their families.

We need to educate people when they are young about healthy eating habits and keep junk food out of the schools.

We need to support the family farms that grow healthy crops, so they can produce them and make a decent living from farming (to prevent factory farming from taking over our food supply). By doing this, we can keep prices of healthy foods low, while farmers can make a decent wage.

As far as type two prevention, I would have to say that promoting diet and exercise from a young age would be a good start. Perhaps stepping up the health education in schools a bit.

But as for type one..well, there isn't much that can be done outside of treatment/searches for a cure.

Start by educating new mothers in nutrition. Feed school kids proper portions and no "junk". It's just disgusting what parents allow their children to eat these days. They also need nutritional education. Kids learn by example. Parents and educators need to set an example. Parents: stop giving your kids money for vending machines at school!!! Ask the school board to take them out! Stop taking your kids for a quick meal at McDonalds! You are killing your children and yourselves.

Remove tax from healthy foods. Higher tax for anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup, fast food, chips, ice cream, donuts, etc.. We tax alcohol and cigs why not bad food.

It all begins with changing the eating habits of Americans. To do so they have to start with children's eating habits in schools. By changing the food that is available to them, it sets them up to eat better for their adult years.
