Because bad habits do exist

Why do people drink?

I smoke and have for years, it's an addiction, habit whatever you want to call it. I only smoke at my home, I never smoke in public and subject others to my smoking out of respect for those that do not wish to be around it. But I do not drink, so really why should I be subjected to drinking at a restaurant when that it not something I want to see or be around but I have the respect to not smoke. It's a total double standard, smokers are being looked at and treated like crackheads but yet you see more and more people dying daily due to intoxicated drivers. Hmm how odd.

I think a lot of people START smoking for the coolness factor. Then most continue to smoke because nicotine is addictive. It has a calming effect that the smoker gets accustomed to. That's why people who quit are so irritable when they're breaking the addiction.

30 years ago people smoked because there was still some question left as to how bad for you cigarettes really were.

Many teenagers and young adults start smoking as rebellion, thoughts of invincibility, peer pressure, boredom, curiosity, and likely a disbelief of statements of the many harmful effects of smoking. There is also a general belief based on anecdotal evidence that "It won't happen to me." Almost everyone knows of a person either indirectly or remotely ho smoked for many years and never had lung cancer or any of the other illnesses that arise from smoking.

The CDC lists over 14,000 medical articles on everything from gestational damage to unborn children, to COPD, to stroke or heart disease.

Many people fail to quit smoking because of the highly addictive nature of the nicotine in tobacco.

According to Freud, there are 5 stages people go through in life. The first one is the oral stage.

Nursing - eating, as well as mouth movement, including sucking, gumming, biting and swallowing.
To the infant, the mother's breast not only is the source of food and drink, but also represents her love. Because the child's personality is controlled by the id and therefore demands immediate gratification, responsive nurturing is key. Both insufficient and forceful feeding can result in fixation in this stage.

Symptoms of Oral Fixation:

-Smoking
-Constant chewing on gum, pens, pencils, etc.
-Nail biting
-Overeating
-Drinking
-Sarcasm ("the biting personality") and verbal hostility
-And Talkativeness (If that is a word)

People smoke usually because of a case of depression. They seem to feel as if it lightens their spirits Smoking is very bad for you, and in the end, will not cheer your spirits, it will just make you more depressed, and you will die sooner, which is abusing the gift that God gave you: Your Life.

People smoke because they think it's cool, and for some it does help to calm them down. I smoke because it calms me down. I suffer from depression and for me it does work. The only thing that I don't like about smoking is that it makes your breath stink. We're all going to die of something one day, we might as well do it of something we like or love doing.

I myself tried it when I was 16 because my friends where doing it then after awhile it became a regular part of my day after 12yrs. I was still doing it everyday, but then I decided that I had done it long enough so I stopped and let me tell you it is the hardest thing I have ever done. Whatever you do don't start. I know that most X-Smokers say don't start and it does sound hypocritical, but believe me we know first hand how crappy you feel when you decide that you should stop for yourself and the ones around you. Not to mention How EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE this habit is.
