Sed rate is a nonspecific sign of inflammation - the hallmarks of inflammation are swelling, redness, pain, and warmth. An elevated Sed rate can mean plenty of things including a temporary flair of osteoarthritis. 39 is mildly elevated and probably means nothing.

As you get older, your sed rate will rise. 39 is normal for an older person. If he is young and has a 39 sed rate it could indicate a number of things.....like lupus or arthritis....but you need to narrow that down as well.

A sed rate simply indicates inflammation. If his other blood work is negative, I wouldn't worry about it. It would help, however, to know why he had a sed rate checked in the first place.

My wife, seriously, is a 9.8, maybe 9.9 (they say there is no 10, right?) She is 42, has had 2 children. NO ONE would guess her age at more than 28. She has a body most women half her age would kill for. Men crash into displays at the grocery store when she walks by, one almost got hit by a car in the parking lot because he was staring at her. Seriously. But she has the greatest personality and never "acts like" she is beautiful. She is absolutely drop dead gorgeous and does NOTHING except wear a little make-up and complimentary clothes. I have my own scale. The "Budweiser" scale. On this scale she is a 3. This is how many clydesdale horses it will take to pull me off her!
