Pizza Italian,Taco Mexican, Sour crout German etc. I am really curious to what the real common dishes of some countries really are. Anyone from Germany,Italy,England,Ireland,Australia,China, Japan, etc. that could share what a common meal would be in your home country?

I'm from Portugal. Portuguese cuisine is not internationally famous and you can barely find a portuguese restaurant outisde Portugal (except in regions where there are a lot of Portuguese emmigrants), but foreign people who visit the country are usually stunned by how good portuguese food is.

There are a lot of national dishes, probably the most important being "cozido à portuguesa" and "caldeirada". Both of them are stews, but the first one is made of various kinds of meat and vegetables while the second one is made of various types of fish. But the one name you should remember about portuguese cuisine is "bacalhau", which means codfish. It is by far the favourite fish of the portuguese, and we usually say we have 365 different recipes of it, one for each day of the year. The most famous ones are "bacalhau com natas", "bacalhau à gomes de sá" and "bacalhau à brás".

Then of course there are typical dishes from different parts of the country. In my city (Porto) it is "tripas à moda do Porto", a tripes dish. The legend has many versions, but basically, either because they sent all the meat to the soldiers who went south to release Lisbon from the spanish in 1384, or to the explorers who went south to conquer Ceuta in 1415, or to the men who were defending the city walls under a seige in 1822 - or even because, when they were under seige, they sent some animals out the walls to show the invaders they had plenty of food inside (when they didn't) - the inhabitants of Porto were left with only the tripes to eat, and started cooking them with beans. That is how this dish was born.

Another typical dish from Porto is the "francesinha". It is a kind of sandwish - but eaten with a knife and fork - made of a lot of different meats, cheese and a spicy sauce. I used to love it when I wasn't a vegetarian!

But of course not all typical dishes are cooked frequently nowadays. People don't have a lot of time to cook and most of the time they end up cooking something simple, like rice, pasta, beans or potatoes, with beef or grilled fish or something like that. But when people have more time or when they eat in restaurants they usually go for the typical dishes. And it is very common to eat soup before meals, either at home or outside. The drink can vary a lot, but most commonly we drink red wine.

I'm from Singapore. We have loads of different kinda food since it's a multi-cultural place. Most common I should think are Malay, Indian and Chinese food. A typical day could go like this...
Breakfast: Nasi Lemak (Rice cooked with coconut milk with egg and spicy sambal. Origin: Malay)
Lunch: Chicken Rice (Rice cooked in chicken broth w/ chicken and a lil bit of "chilli sauce" on the side. Origin: Chinese)
Dinner: Anything that's available... Fried rice, noodles etc. etc.
Supper: Prata with curry. (Fried indian pancake)

I'm hungry just thinking bout it. Haha.
Ask me if you wanna know more...

From the Philippines, "ADOBO". It's chicken and pork cutlets stewed in soy sauce, vinegar, crushed garlic (lots!), chopped onions, bay leaves, salt & peppercorns. After all the liquid has dried up, vegetable oil is added to fry the meat (to make it nice & crispy on the outside but tender on the inside). It's eaten with steamed or garlic fried rice and slices of fresh tomatoes and salted duck eggs (or sunny side up eggs will do). Try it!

Puerto Rico- and anything that involves rice beans and chicken and you got yourself a meal. But if you want to go traditional you got to include pasteles which is similar to a tamal but is made with green bananas and pork (not your regular bananas people and not plantains). You have to also include some fried plantains, green or ripened- if green they are savoury and you add garlic they are amazing, and if they are yellow then they are really sweet. And then you got your finger foods, alcapurias, empanadillas, rellenos de papa, cirullitos, and anything else that you can fry.

My favourite dinner is Shepherds Pie - sauteéd minced beef (should really be lamb, I know) and finely chopped vegetables with gravy, under a mashed potato topping, which is then baked in the oven until the top goes crispy. Yum!.

Singapore is a multi racial country so we have Indian food, malay, chinese and western cuisine but basically we eat rice everyday. It can range from Chicken rice (my favourite), Briyani rice and also plain white rice with dishes.. "Satay" is good too.. Its skewered meat grilled over charcoal and dipped with peanut sauce!
