I do remodeling ( mostly commercial property) and have run across this problem alot. A air filtration system may work for a while but the problem will continue to grow and spread. The only sure way to get rid of the problem is to cut out the affected sheet rock and replace it. Some companies will say they can treat it, but most will only use chemicals that will kill the growth and bleach the color but won't kill the spores. Be careful when talking to contractors, a lot of them will charge you for things the don't need to do.

If the walls are the old-style plaster, black mold doesn't live on that very long. If your walls are sheetrock, you need to have the landlord check them. Black mold loves sheetrock, and if the sheetrock got wet, it is probably molded. I got lucky, my apartment is on the second floor, and the place is so old, there's no sheetrock at all. Water came in from the ceiling, and the carpet got wet and that got moldy, so the landlord ripped it up and simply refinished the hardwood floors.

get someone to check your apartment like a building inspector if you really think you have black mold. if the inspector confirms your suspicions, have him write a detailed report for you complete with photos. move out and find a new apartment. no lease is binding if it endangers your health.
