The walls of bronchi become damaged and dilated so that they trap air. They become useless for exchange of gases. If only a part of a lung or one lung is affected, it can be removed surgically and the remaining lung tissue may function normally. If both the lungs are affected, there is chronic irreversible lung disease.

all i know is that it is an irreversible abnormal dilatation of the bronchi or bronchichioles. the extent of the discorder may range from a mild involvement of a single pulmonary segment to gross distortion of the entire brochial tree.
