In my family we have cake first and then we let the birthday girl or boy open the presents...i think thats the proper way to do it because there's something for the people to do while the birthday girl or boy is having there fun, but other families have there way of doing it. I'm not sure now, maybe the proper way is what you think is proper or whatever your family does.

I think its presents and then celebration with cake last. Example: Birthday party. You give the presents and wait for the person to open them so every body is focused on the person celebrating the birthday not the cake. Then you sing Happy Birthday and cut the cake.

It's whatever you want as the birthday person I like to pass out the cake and ice cream and have everyone seated and comfortable and have the birthday person seated at a table with all the gifts on it and I hand a gift to the birthday person, the person opens each gift and I hold it up for all to see and read the card and the birthday person can eat their cake and ice cream during opening and I open the presents and show them and read the card or after we are done.

In my family it usually goes dinner, presents, cake as the last thing. I don't think there is a proper way to do it.. it's just however your family likes to do it.

There is no proper way. It's all good. The more traditional way is to sing happy birthday, blow out candles and then serve cake while the birthday boy or girl opens gifts.

Cake first. That way you don't keep guests waiting for it while the birthday boy/girl opens presents.
