Milk, cheese, etc. is not vegetarian. I think that you will find that true vegetarianism originally did not include eggs or dairy, no animal stuff period. Ethics was also, always part of the original picture.
It was the business and corporate concerns (restaurants, food & agri companies, etc.) that diluted vegetarianism for convenience and their own monetary gains and along with those wanting to appear more environmentally and ethically conscientious, politically correct, etc.. Hence , a need to distinguish from all the pseudo versions, lacto-- and ovo- vegetarians etc., so vegan was created. And , out of necessity, vegan became a more pure branch , beyond food ,by also not using any animal products.
It is simple- you are either vegetarian or not, you either eat animal or not. There is no in between.

ovo-lacto vegetarians eat milk and eggs but no animal corpses. vegans eat no animal products, including mild or eggs. I have never seen milk and eggs separately defined.

kill or not.
An egg could have been a chick.
Milk is just milk though some veggies also don't drink milk unless it is Soymilk.
