As a vegan, I eat a diet high in whole grains and vegetables. Nearly all foods, includings vegetables and fruit, contain some protein. I closely monitored my vegan diet for 6 months by recording the protein, carbohydrate and fat content. What I found out was that I averaged 75 grams of protein per day (which is the U.S. RDA) on a totally vegan diet, with no supplementation of protein powder, etc.

If you eat a balanced vegetarian diet, not just salads for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you should be fine. To ensure that your diet is balance, do what I did and track your protein intake for several months just to make sure.

Also, be prepared for criticism of your choice from the uneducated. Remind them that if vegetarians are all nutrition and protein compromised, they why do vegetarians (in the U.S.) live 7 years longer on a ovo-lacto vegetarian diet, and 11 years longer on a vegan diet, than the meat eaters, with lower rates of all known chronic diseases? They normally don't have an answer for that one.

The link below for the Vegetarian Society will give you some good guidelines for getting started again.

Everything has protein. Its almost impossible not to get enough. In fact, Americans eat too much of it.

Lentils, beans and pasta are great sources and so are soya products like Boca products and tofu.

Ignorant people will tell you it's not a healthy diet. It is healthy if you eat properly and include whole grains, veggies, fruits, legumes etc. Google "the vegetarian food pyramid" to see what you should be eating and how many servings of each.

I don't understand why non-vegetarians bother to answer questions not directed to them. They don't know the answers and base it on nothing more then what was drilled into their heads.

Regardless of what the responder below says, NO vegetarian eats fish. Fish are animals and vegetarians do not eat animals.

First, don't let people psych you out about being a vegetarian. You aren't going to hurt yourself as long as you maintain a balanced diet. I've been a Vege for almost 2 years and I am very healthy. The biggest thing you should me mindful of is that when you don't get enough protein you crave very fatty foods - so be careful about that. You can get protein from yogurt, cottage cheese, reg. cheese, nuts, eggs, fish (if you eat that - some vegetarians do), peanut butter, protein bars (Luna bars are very good). Good luck!

Initially, Congrats on sticking together with your want to emerge as a vegetarian regardless of what your mum and dad think! I know how you suppose, once I became a vegetarian 3 years ago my dad was not comfortable (My mother honestly grew to be a vegetarian with me!). Anyway my dad is a tremendous carnivore and saved looking to persuade me to go back to meat in my first weeks as vegetarian, however I refused. But he bought over it! He finally stopped badgering me about what I devour and a couple weeks ago my mother said he was once going to begin being a vegetarian 1 day a week! So despite the fact that it's going to have taken awhile, i'm relatively desirous about his determination! So your mother and father are commonly going to hassle about it for awhile, however they're going to stop!! There's lots of vegetarian meals that you could have from simple constituents. You could add frozen veggies, beans and/or nuts to rice to get a healthful meal. You could have pasta or spagetti. You would have bean soups or meat subsitutes. There are all kinds of prospects! Simply sample specific things until you find some you like and except you find a style of healthful veg meals you revel in you could live on PB&J and other vegetarian snacks so you do not go hungry =) sincerely being a vegetarian method not consuming animal merchandise. In case your just a vegetarian you are not able to devour meat of any form (or something with gelatin, this is a meat product), however can nonetheless devour milk and eggs. If your a vegan, nevertheless, you can't consume any meat, dairy or egg merchandise, gelatin and alot of vegans quit honey as good. Hope I helped!

I have been a vegan for years, so I want to thank you on behalf of all vegans for rejoining the solution. The truth with protein is it is really easy to get enough. Unless you are a body builder you don't need to worry about protein supplements at all. It is in so much of what you eat as a vegetarian already! If you are a body buuilder try soy protein smoothies, yummy and a great protein boost for your muscles.

There are lots of natural sources of protein without getting animal sourced food. You get a complete protein from yams believe it or not. No, not the candied sweet potatoes in a can, but a real yam. Bake it like a potato or mix it in to a stir fry. You also get protein from dark green vegetables like kale, spinach, broccoli, brussell sprouts and more! Of course you know most nuts make a great protein source too. I like to sprinkle sunflower seeds on my salads, or cashews in my stir fry yummm! Beans are also a great protein source. I like to use black beans in my salads, stir Fry's, and Mexican food. However most beans will do so find your favorite! Just watch out for the re-fried ones, most of the time those have pork flavoring in them. Tofu is made from soybeans and a great meat substitute in any meal. Also watch for wheat meat which is another meat substitute that is textured like chicken.
Just as a side note, Americans are protein obsessed as a way of rationalizing their over meat consumption. The percent of protein we actually need as the average person is about 1/4 of what most people take in on an average day. So don't obsess too much on the protein, your probably doing better at balancing your diet than most meat eaters!

beans and other legumes, nuts like almonds or cashews, tofu and soy burgers and imitation meats, and protein supplements to be added to food or drink. eggs also provide protein.

i do agree with the above post that you should do some of your own research about the vegetarian lifestyle. it's quite difficult to stay healthy on such a diet ... so just research beforehand and make sure you will receive all the nutrients you need daily.

Being a vegetarian has more health risks than just making sure you get enough protein. PLEASE do some research and make sure you understand what you're doing to your body. It is not natural for a human to be a vegetarian, so you have to be VERY careful about your diet in order to stay healthy.

Don't just look at pro-vegetarian sites, you may not get the whole story. Make sure you listen to both sides before doing something this drastic to your body.

it's a diet not a lifestyle. make sure you balance your diet properly. there are a lot of radical vegetarians out there who talk sh#t. If you eat dairy and eggs regularly you can stay healthy without too much worry.
Beans , paneer cheese, soy, lentils etc are all great sources of protein.
don't become a vegan that's really stupid and unhealthy.

soy products, beans, peanut butter, cheese, milk. I really like the soy chicken nuggets. The ones in the green box. I think they are morning star, but not 100%sure. I like the veggie burgers too, any kind, but the vegan ones are the best. A lot of people like tofu, but I think that it tastes like rubber.
