The only symptom I had was fatigue. I was sleeping a lot and had a difficult time staying awake, esp. after meals. My doctor initially attributed this to other issues, as my blood glucose was fine for a long time. I had one stressful event and for whatever reason, my blood glucose showed diabetes.

Many people do not have symptoms. This is why it is often called the "silent killer" because many people do not notice being ill or have symptoms present before being diagnosed. If you feel you may be at risk, such as if you are overweight, aboriginal, Asian, family history, high cholesterol, had given birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds, etc. have your blood checked professionally, both a 12 hour fast and a 2-hour glucose tolerance test would be indicative of any problems, if present.

the best way of detection is just the monitoring of blood sugar level monitoring , and more preferably the fasting level (which means about 8 hours food free time).
symptoms may vary from person to person, but mostly they will be increase in apetiite, loss of weight, increase thirst, increased frequency especilly at night , generalized weakness, and long termely effects the body organs like eyes, kidneys, heart and muscles.
normal fasting level should be less than 100 mg/dl while random blood sugar level should be less than 120 mg/dl.

the all above detail was for diabetes mellitus, and i hope that you didnot ask for diabetes inspidus
