My family says the same thing to me. You're not alone! I like some of the "fake" stuff. There's really only one kind of "fake" chicken I like, and that's some veggie chicken nuggets I can get at Trader Joe's. They're awesome with barbecue sauce.

I like the veggie burgers, mostly the black bean ones by Morningstar Farms and the original Gardenburgers. These are made out of different things and have a different taste, which I think is why I like them. I think when I decided to stop eating red meat, chicken, and pork, I had grown tired of them since I had eaten them for 20+ years. So the black bean burgers are wonderful.

I tried the fake bacon- it's not worth it. I have no idea how to soften that stuff to seem like "real" bacon when it's eaten.

I only eat meat if I can see where it lived. For this reason, I won't eat hotdogs or fast food, or many grocery bought meats. I will however go to the local butcher or a local farm to get meat. I like to know that the animals are well treated until they are killed. I know that will sound weird, but it is much worse for a chicken to sit in a tiny wire cage getting shat on and pecked to death with its beak cut off, than it is to be killed. The same goes for cows. It is less traumatic for cows to be outside in a nice place before being killed than it is to be stuck in a truck for most of it's life, unable to lay down or move. Or in the case of veal, crammed into a box with it's legs broken.

My point is that if I don't have an alternative to cruel meat, and I have a craving for meat, I will turn to alternative meats. Also, garden burgers are not trying to taste like meat. They are just rice and cheese and mushrooms, etc. formed into a patty so it can go onto a bun. I don't really like vegetarian sausage, bacon, or lunch meats. I would rather go without those, but there are some fake meats that are actually very good. Riblets by Gardenburger are one of those.

Yes! I love it! The veggie burgers, etc are delicious! You just have to know what to buy.

Veggie bugers by Boca are delicious! I always buy the All-American Flame grilled kind. There are other flavors, but that one is the best.

Veggie Spicy Chicken Patties by Boca are amazing!!!! Omgee it is so good! I can't believe how much better it tastes than real meat.

There is another brand called Morningstar (their burgers are gross, so just buy Boca Burgers).
:]
But Morningstar has excellent veggie hot dogs, chicken nuggets, and corn dogs! They also have bacon and sausage that I haven't tried, but I am sure it is good.

Why would you eat the real stuff? When it has dead animal inside it? Why eat a real hot dog when you can eat Morningstars veggie dogs which taste better, are GOOD for you, and don't contain nasty dead animal parts. ewww.

Yes, the veggie meats are delicious, and found in the frozen food section of WalMart. You just have to search for them. They have a whole section of stuff. There is another brand called Gardenburger, I tried one of their wraps one time, and it was pretty gross, so I havent tried anything else of theirs.

You can also find these products in health food stores, etc, but I would stick to WalMart if I were you, and the ones I have listed.

There are lots of choices for vegetarians, and we are healthier than meat eaters, which is a bonus.

For every vegetarian, 95 animals a year are saved.
Keep that in mind, dear, and good luck, and thanks, for caring enough to help.

I gave up eating red meat. My parents made me. I'm OK with it. Occasionally at work I see the burgers, and say that looks good. I like the veggie Buffalo wings, because they are the hottest I know of. I like veggie bacon because of the flavor and I don't care for the grease. Boca makes a great Italian sausage! I enjoy the "fake stuff" that is why I eat it.

I LOVE IT.

The vegan "sausage" crumbles taste wonderful. My fiance had no clue I used them in the pizza I made. I cut quite a few calories and made the pizzas much healthier. Plus, it wasn't as greasy as the "real stuff."

Morningstar farms seems to have the higher quality products. I tend to buy them when they go on sale or if I have coupons.

Don't listen to them...You eat the fake stuff because it tastes pretty good nowadays--in the past, the stuff tasted like cotton. yuck. Now, it is MUCH better. You reap the health benefits--less fat, less grease. The spicy chik'n is REALLY good. It may cost you a little more, but I think it is worth it.

My veggie pizza:

You can cheat and use a pre made crust and ready made sauce.

Preheat the oven--usually to 425.
Place the crust onto a cookie sheet or a pizza stone.

Brush the crust with olive oil.

Spoon sauce onto crust and spread...you can use as much or as little as you want. (I use the GOOD sauces. NOT RAGU! A little more expensive but you can do what you want. )

Top with some reduced fat mozzarella or regular cheese. You can also experiment with a variety of cheeses even Vegan "cheese."

Add 1/4-1/2 a package of Vegan Sausage crumbles.

I also use olives, mushrooms, and diced onions...put as much as you want. You can also put fresh spinach and chopped broccoli.

Top with a bit more cheese.

Put into oven for about 15 minutes

I broil it for about 1 minute to make the cheese extra bubbly.

Remove from oven. Cool a little and enjoy.

my fiance is vegetarian as i am not. I have had veggie burgers and such and they really arent that bad. In fact i have a few things i even make out of regular tofu. i do not agree with your family on the part of you should just eat real meat instead of the fake based on its the same thing.......they are completely different. "Fake" meat is made out of soy beans. my fiance has been vegetarian for over 8 yrs. as for not getting enough protien,
you can get that from eggs if your not vegan, just vegetarian....and peanut butter has protien in it. The two best producers of vegetarian food are MorningStar and Boca

Personally I don't eat stuff like soya mince or TVP as the texture is too similar to meat - it makes me feel queasy. Also I don't like meat flavour foods, even if they are vegetarian.

My wife is a veggie and she eats that stuff though. So I suppose there are various aspects involved - the taste/texture; the health side of things and the morality. I guess if you eat the fake stuff you don't mind the taste/texture but have moral issues about eating dead animals.

Hope that makes sense!

Because the fake stuff is not made from animals and is that not the point?

Why does meat only have to shaped like a burger?

The 'fake stuff' as you call it is great for anyone giving up meat. It looks like you are eating as you did before, however without meat, so the transition is made somewhat easier.
These foods also come in handy if you are cooking for meat eaters as they can see giving up meat isn't as bad as they might have thought. I see them as a great standby.
I dont buy them usually as I prefer to cook tofu or lentils and I eat very simple and healthy meals.
So if they are not meat, how can anyone say eat meat instead. That makes no sense to me.

I eat it because it is not made of animals. It helps to give you different foods that you can choose from if you don't want to eat meat.

It's not fake it's just different. It also gives you a chance to have barbecues and things with meat eating friends without looking like the odd one out.

Eat what you enjoy and ignore what others have to say.
