I order at Tony Luke's (Geno's competition). This is so stupid. Geno's is actually on a lot of tourist maps in Philly. these tourists bring the city & its businesses a lot of revenue. This comment and sign at Geno's is bad for the city and bad for the reputation of Philadelphians.

You almost lost me with that question. Geno's? Must be distinctly Italian. Sanitizer, do you keep pinesol and handiwipes with you? One of the differences I have discerned from our dialogue, which I do appreciate, is that the East Coast is much more ethnically aware than the West. You identified yourself, actually your father, as being Slovak. I don't hear people identifying themselves in the same ethnic way over here. There are no Polish or Italian parts of Portland. There are areas where there are more African Americans, but that is about it. I have never had a real Philadelphia cheese steak sandwich. Perhaps, that is our loss.

That depends on where I am.
Am I in America? Then English all the way. If in another country (of course, what other country could possibly have a REAL philly cheesesteak?) the I would try to use the native language to the best of my ability.
It's what I would expect from visitors; as such, I have to apply the same standard to myself.
You don't have to be fluent in the local language; Just showing that you have put in some effort and are trying is more than enough to be treated politely in almost any country you visit.

In english. This is America. Learn the language or go home. If I moved to France (god forbid) I'd learn French d*mned quick. If I moved to Japan, same thing. People are moving here, living here, working here and NOT bothering to learn the language. Sorry. This is a Melting Pot. if you don't melt, you get thrown out.

Well English of course...I have a hard enough time with this language and my accent that I would never try another...I could see me trying to speak French and with my accent...Oh that would not be a good thing!

I saw that report.
So, if Geno's nona came and ordered in Italian, he's going to turn her down?
Why can't we all just get along?
