Also I believe my grandmother's mother had it too.

Is type 1 the genetic one or type 2?

I am sorry to say but it is very possible to be diabetic if your mother, and both grandmother, and great-grandmother are diabetic. does your dad have it? if he does then it is more likely to get almost about 90% but with. but if your dad does not have it the percentage is around 75-80...but you can get lucky that you did NOT receive that part of your mothers trait of diabetes (SP?)

Type 1 used to be the definition for the one where your pancreas was not producing any or enough insulin on its own and type 2 was where you were producing enough insulin, but your cells were resistant to it.

I have recently heard that type 1 is now defined as juvenile - onset and type 2 as adult onset.

I would recommend you asking your doctor for a fasting blood insulin test. This will tell you if you are under- or over-producing insulin. With that information, and the proper diet and exercise, you may never have diabetes, and may prevent a lot of the pre-diabetes symptoms, too, one of which is obesity.

I dint know but the 2ND is well know to me. My Grandmother had it and my mom had it while pregnant with my sister. And my sister might have it, i don't really know. I think type 1 is the genetic one. I hope you don't have it. If your having spells then you might need iron pills like a Multivitamin. Or it could be the 2ND where you have to watch your diet like looking to see if you need more or less sugar. I wouldn't take a chance if you want to drink pop drink Diet Pepsi or any other Diet pop. Try to get it checked out ask your doctor for further information. Hope you don't get either of them.

It is type 2 diabetes ("non-insulin dependant", although some ARE on insulin, also called "Adult Onset") that has a strong genetic component.
However, this genetic component is not Mendelian - in other words, one cannot calculate exact odds of getting it depending on the family pattern, as it is not a single responsible gene (as far as we currently know).

Both are genetic. You stand a greater risk of developing diabetes than the general population. Get glucose tests on a regular basis (I would recommend once a year if your medical insurance will cover it).

both types are genetic. type 2 probably more so. if they were all type 2, you can make efforts to prevent DM from developing. like maintain a "normal" body weight, stay active with regular exercise, see your healthcare provider for regular checkups and make sure he/she is aware of your family history, be aware of symptoms of diabetes, like weight loss, excessive thirst and urination, blurred vision, tingling or numbness of the hands or feet, frequent fungal infection like yeast, frequent UTIs. See http://www.diabetes.org (ADA website) for more info and/or http://www.ndei.org/ (national diabetes education initiative)

Types 1 and 2 are the current correct terminology. Juvenile and adult onset are the OLD terms. Type 1 can develop in adults, though less frequently, and type 2 is now sometimes developed in childhood and adolescents, thanks to our more sedentary and overwieght lifestyles
