Anything less than 200 is a normal level. Yes, high cholesterol over a period of years can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure and clogged arteries (atherosclerosis). Cholesterol is eaten and is made naturally by the body.

It is also hereditary and can be caused by eating unhealthy foods. There are two kinds HDL (healthy) & LDL (unhealthy).

It is unlikely you have heart disease at your age. Start eating a healthy diet with plenty of fruits & vegetables, dairy products (in moderation) and lean cuts of meat. Exercise regularly and stay out of fast-food places. You are never too young to learn healthy eating habits. The fact you are asking now is a good sign.

not high enough to put you at risk for heart disease (maybe 30 years down the road it would start to), but id try to get it down. 210 would be ok for an older adult, but its a little on the high side for a 17 year old; and cholesterol usually increases with age. just exercises regularly if you arent already. if you dont exercises youll be amazed at how much it drops. and if you eat eggs a lot, cut back on those a bit. as you get older you might have to start taking a drug like lipitor or zocor or something to keep it down.

sometimes the problem is genetic though and there isnt much you can do about it, but more often than not its because people are 1) eating too many high cholesterol foods or 2) not exercising

210 is pretty high. Your doctor should be advising you what to do about it.
