It depends on what type of food the Birthday person likes, and what type of party it is. I tend to like a party with at least some form a theme and the food should match the theme. If all else fails try Pizza.

I use to have hamburgers and hot dogs, but found myself cooking them all trough the party. Then i started to have barbecue sandwiches you make it in the crock pot and it stays warm through the party, and then i have hot dogs for the kids that don't like barbecue, those you can have in a crock pot too, to keep warm. Then just have some chips and snacks for them to have with it. Then of course the Cake and maybe some ice cream.

It completely depends on the age of your guests. I entertain a lot of people from my church and I have found that "new" and "different" dishes don't do well at social gatherings. People traditionally will migrate toward the "comfort" foods they already know and like. So when entertaining a variety of people that you are unsure of, stick with the "regular" food items. If it's a bunch of your family and you know they like to try new foods, then go for it and have them be your guinea pigs for a new dish.

Depends on the age og the guests. Finger foods are always good. And a cake or sweets area a must.

Prepare small finger foods, because they're easier to eat and mingle without doing a whole sit-down meal. Have fun!!
