I'm looking for traditional Japanese foodstuffs (ume-boshi, natto, etc.). I know of Mitsuwa in NJ but I'm looking for something closer.

The obvious (fatuous) answer is a Japanese grocery store. There may be one in Fairfield count or in an adjacent county . Check the various nearby yellow pages. (the public library has them, the Net might). A store might require a longish drive but the goods are often canned, or can be frozen, or stored in a dry cool place that is dark. (New York City would then be feasible). But there is now an alternative. Vietnamese grocery stores ferquently carry items used in Malaysian, Indonesian, Sri Lankan, South Indian dishes. The largewr stores can have a huge variety of ethnic ingredients from many Asian cuisines.
I have even bought such ingredients in areas of the the rural south that had few Asian restaurants.
Have you considered mail order and the net?
You might even get very good prices as well as convenient shopping.
